I have to go to my wife to have her use her nails to open coin capsules I get with coins in them from the mint. Anyone have a proven method?

A small pocket knife works if you don’t have fingernails

Single edge razor blade. Careful 🤓

dull blade from utility knife
All of the above. But we're leaving out one essential element. Patience. Go slow if you want to be able to snap back into place, so you don't crack it! If and when you want it back in the original position. Good Luck.![;) ;)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)

Nevermind.
I hope that you do not mind the inquiry, but you have piqued my curiosity.
Why are you removing coins from the Mint capsules (e.g., submission to PCGS, alternative storage method, photographs, etc.)?
Submission to PCGS
I suppose PCGS doesn't allow submission in mint capsules... Bastards.![ ](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
I'm sure they get them all the time. My local shop uses a staple puller like this

They accept coins in mint capsules..

I agree with @Danno44. In my experience, PCGS does accept coins in Mint capsules.
My last submission was in June-2021. I submitted the coins in Mint capsules.
Specifically, I followed the packaging guidelines, and placed the capsules into Mylar flips.
No issues with the submission.
Since PCGS accepts the Mint capsules, I just send them in that way.
I figure the less I handle the coins, the better.
Good luck with your grades !!!
An Xacto knife works great on coin capsules without doing
damage to the plastic capsule. Has a fine strong blade ....
I always submit in original capsule, actually send in the whole box. They used to send back the packaging but my last shipment they did not.
But yes to everything listed above, I use a knife to start, then pull it off carefully with my fingers
On the rare occasion I want a coin out of the mint capsule, I use my knife edge to separate the halves. Simple and, with caution, problem free. Cheers, RickO
Agree. The trick is to slowly and cautiously work the knife edge around seam of the capsule until the two halves separate. Do it over a soft surface so the coin isn't damaged when it falls out.

Sometimes I wonder if the post office sorts packages using a chainsaw
And would probably give you a bucketful back if you paid S & H!
Haven't seen anyone say it yet, but once you start getting it apart you should twist or rotate the pieces so the sides stay equidistant from each other and not get too tight.

The submission forms says…
“House your coins individually in 2-1/2” x 2-1/2” Mylar flips (we do not accept acrylic snap cases or cardboard and stapled holders). Place the coin in the inside front pouch of the flip so the openings of the flip are not exposed.
Hence why I asked the question….
My trick- Not buying things from the US Mint.
Looking for Top Pop Mercury Dime Varieties & High Grade Mercury Dime Toners.
Take a plastic knife and sand/file to a more sharpened edge. The capsule is harder than the plastic knife. It wont cut the capsule. Patience plus work around twice before trying to open. Eventually the knife wears out. Probably in ten capsules.
Oh Man, there's Geometry involved??? Crap!

Send it in in the capsule keep packaging and COA. This comes up and that seems to be the answer 🥸

I am surprised that nobody mention TNT.
The humorous posts did make me chuckle.
