Did you see the scratches near the black spot where someone tried to remove the spot. Dodged a bullet.

One of those that need to be seen in-hand, especially before dropping 7k+ on. Didn't look too bad from the images, imo.

I tried like hell to win a coin I'd been tracking. I guess my thinking was way off.
    I was the underbidder.

Thanks, at least I can feel a little better with that thought.
I didn't obviously get to see it in person but I did reach out to Heritage for an evaluation.
This is what I got back...

I had asked questions about the surfaces and the luster on both sides.

Still in the years I've been looking at Latin American 8 Reales, I can't recall another so attractively toned.
All for the best, I was stretching hard at that point anyway.

    Thanks Brian!

Wow - that 8 Reales even caught my eye as really outstanding - and I don't even collect those! But you are right, looks like the obverse had been messed with a bit. You really need a trusted pair of eyes if you can't see in person.

This was a purchase off these boards, and I forgot the seller. I saw the 1912 Caballito went for 2880 today in like grade, small change for you guys (but mine was somewhat discounted at 355USD. LOL).

Seriously, who is buying Hooknecks for 100k and all of the other prices that seem to high to one outside of this area? Is it just me or are people to at least some degree flabbergasted by these prices? They make my Brit coins of possible equal or greater rarity and some of beauty (ie Gothic florins in proof) seem to be tokens of paupers...

    Love that Milled British (1830-1960)
    Well, just Love coins, period.

If you bought a 1912 Caballito in PCGS 65 for $355, you got a rip!

I don’t find $2880 unusual for that coin.

The 100k Hookneck and the 100k Small Letter Max were purchased by an unsophisticated player. He may have the last laugh. Or not? Only time will tell.

It a was great show, I met with some friends since last summer FUN show, others since 2020 winter FUN show, and met with others for the first time. I did buy some Latin America pieces, specially Mexico and Bolivia gold and silver. Moreover, I was also glad to find a 1825 Peru 2 Reales in nice condition.
@Eddi I did get a Colonial Santiago 2 Reales 1807, which has a mintage of 47,000 for that year.

Mind sharing what you saw from Bolivia? I don't buy it regularly but also collect better Republic decimals, 1864-1909.

I bought some minor cobs, colonial 8 Reales, and 1/2 and 1 Scudo. Also a nice 1828 1/2 Sol in 66.

I was the under bidder with a cut bid at the end on the Uruguay Peso in 67. I’m frankly glad I lost with the level it reached.

I am interested in the tougher coins in the 1864-1909 dates: 1866 1/5 Boliviano, 1892-1909 copper nickel 5 and 10 centavos I do not have, 1865 1/10 Boliviano, 1864 and 1878 2 centavos. Coins like these.

I think in relative terms that is crazy (BTW, I bought my 1912 raw on these boards and hosts then certified it as 65 with NO other Latin American coins submitted at that time).

I love these Caballitos and bought the book; thinking about having my 1914 slabbed & if it gets a good grade sell it into the teeth of this market.

I can't believe that regular issue MS63 1866-Mo Maximilian Pesos are now $3000 items.

It wasn't too long ago that I bought a beauty for $800 hammer (+BP).

Yet try and sell one outside of an auction venue and see if you can get anywhere close to $3000

  • I wasn't particularly impressed with stack's México gold prices today (I cosigned a few). Silver México seems very strong, and yesterday at HA was crazy.

A gorgeous 1791 8 Reales in P64 sold for over $10k today at Stacks. Someone wants to offer me 10k each for my 64s - you know where to find me.

It would be silly to not take advantage of this market and consign some of my lesser pieces, but i was not planning to break-up my primary set. Coins are not an investment for me, but a hobby. Having said that, the hobby will become less enjoyable for me when I am no longer able to add the type and quality of coins that I find exciting. That happened twice today. We'll see if this develops into a trend, and if it does - i'll have to consider whether shifting focus to another series would make sense.

Today at the Stacks ANA auction session C..... I sold my NGC 67 1868 Go YF 8R for $6000 hammer . I was ok with that outcome.

I still own a PCGS 65 of the same date .

No.....you might ask why did I sell the 67 and keep the 65 ? Well, seriously I thought the difference was imperceptible....and I wanted to test the market with my NGC 67 which I bought for $3500. Nice coin though !

This one must have been a retread as it appeared in my Tracking list complete with a note that said "Bid." So I did, and won. (Maybe HA was telling me something. More likely, I must have viewed it on a prior occasion and put that note there.)

One of the few MS Carlos y Juana 4Rs certified. I believe it is ex-Rudman. Not perfect, but nice surfaces.

Worthy additions @Boosibri and what I thought was a bit of a break on the 1837. I'm not going to spoil the reveal, but will add that was pretty good investigating.

@JohnnyCache - that's a wonderful piece. Sorry you missed out on it. There was a decently priced Guatemalan portrait with a Huntington pedigree that was not noted in the description other than to mention M&E Auction 61

    Looks familiar…

    It is a pretty coin.
I would have been happy with it, irrespective of any actual or percieved blemishes, at around my initial estimate of $4,400+-.

In the heat of the auction, after having seen this coin very early on when it first got listed on Heritage and then visualizing ownership of the coin for 3 or 4 months, in retrospect I did extend my bidding efforts beyond what I was actually comfortable with. Though I'm quite sure that's happened to all of us at one point or another.

Now, with emotion gone and my jets cooled, I'm glad it worked out as it did. It reached a price level that was really well beyond who I am and what I can comfortably afford.

I still, think it's pretty though.

I'm guessing this coin is either going to a deep pocketed collector who wanted the coin for its obvious beauty, or its a speculative move by a dealer/ collector who is going to simply put it away for 10+ years and hope for its appreciation. The thing is at $7,200 I wonder if some of those future years of appreciation were already paid for. The winning bidder was on the floor, there weren't any other Heritage Live bidders after 4k. Making me think dealer.

  • BoosibriBoosibri Posts: 12,212 ✭✭✭✭✭

Perhaps dealer for a client. Dunigan was in the room. If you have video of the coin being sold note the bidder number and the. Rewatch a few other lots and I’d bet you could figure it out. He was bidding with a few numbers.

Isn't that what the auction houses euphemistically call a "pedigree identifying mark" or something like that?

To me it looked like a small lamination that got toned over.
A second spot on the lower right obverse near 4 o'clock appears to be another small flaky lamination.
    What do you guys think?

*Edit to correct my misuse of delamination and replace w/ lamination

  • BoosibriBoosibri Posts: 12,212 ✭✭✭✭✭

Under a 9x loupe it sure looked like whatever the spot was originally, it is now a small pit with tool marks around it
