[CLOSED] LordM 20th anniversary on the CU forums giveaway! Come join the celebration!
UPDATE: August 17th, 2021: this giveaway is now CLOSED. @Cucumbor won.
Greetings, CU forum friends!
It's true I don't see as much of y'all these days, since I spend most of my time on CoinTalk now. But I still love ya, and do still stick my head back in here from time to time.
I just realized that August 17th will be my 20th anniversary here on the CU forums. What a journey it has been. I suppose that calls for a little celebration giveaway!
Here's what we'll do. Why don't you...
1. Wish me a happy anniversary. If you and I go back a ways, share the tale of a coin deal we once did, or some other memory we might share.
2. Tell me which one of the following coins below you would like to have as your prize if you win the drawing!
I'll do the drawing on or shortly after the 17th- my anniversary. Should this get delayed due to my absence- don't fret. You may consider the contest open for entries until such time as I return and wrap it up, depending on my schedule.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship with 99.9% of you over these past two decades.
Numismatic Regards,
~Robertson ("Rob") Shinnick ("LordM")
I've tried to include a little bit of everything here: Dark-Darkside (Ancient), Darkside (World), Greyside (Canadian), Liteside (USA), and Farside (Exonumia), to give you a little bit of a selection. Enjoy!
COIN A
Roman Empire: silver denarius of Trajan, ca. 98-117 AD; Mars advancing
Raw. Looks a bit better than the images. More pictures and info on the linked page above, but I’m afraid all the pics are either underexposed or overexposed.
COIN B
Belgium (Liège): silver Ernestus of Ernest of Bavaria, 1582
PCGS VF Details. "Environmental damage", but attractive contrasting grey toning. Decent sized early-dated silver coin. More images and info on linked page above.
https://www.pcgs.com/cert/39640151
COIN C
Russia: copper 5-kopecks of Catherine the Great, 1769-EM, Ekaterinburg mint
Raw. Large and impressively chunky. I affectionately refer to these as “whopper coppers” for their size and heft. More images and info on linked page above.
COIN D
United States: silver Seated Liberty dime, 1876-CC
Raw. Crusty original toning with “circulation cameo” (CircCam) contrast. More images on (slow-loading) linked page above.
COIN E
United States: silver Morgan dollar, 1904-O
Early ANACS MS63. Moderate grey-gold toning with subdued luster beneath. Sorry for the image quality.
COIN F
United States: silver Barber dime, 1907-O
NGC F12. Handsome original circ. More images on (slow-loading) linked page above.
https://www.ngccoin.com/certlookup/4835644-013/12/
COIN G
United States: copper-nickel Buffalo nickel, 1916-D
PCGS F15. Decent original circ. More images on (slow-loading) linked page above.

COIN H
Canada: bronze large cent, 1918
PCGS MS63 BN. Medium brown.
https://www.pcgs.com/cert/40978455
COIN I
Germany: aluminum 20-pfennig streetcar token (Eisbären, Tiergarten), undated, ca. 1920-1921
PCGS MS65. Polar bears at the zoo! Actually looks nicer than the TrueView, which doesn't show the luster very well.
https://www.pcgs.com/cert/28153652
COIN J
United States: steel Lincoln Wheat cent, 1943-D
PCGS MS66. Nice and lustrous; moreso than seen in the TrueView.

Happy anniversary Rob!
I guess we go back 11 or 12 years…
The Darkside gatherings have always been fun.

I still have the Lord M plate:

Coin A (I haven't had a chance to use RIC in a while)
Happy Anniversary!
We actually first interacted over at Cointalk. I had posted in the "What's it Worth" thread, and you were the first to let me know that I had an Italian Lira worth about $25.
Coin I.
Happy anniversary!!!
I know I've bought a coin or two from you but the problem is I turn 65 two days after your anniversary and my memory is about shot. We did recently trade your elongated coins for one of my website's sample slabs.
Coin E
Thank you. This is a generous Giveaway and the winner will be a lucky person.
@ajaan- I think you might be my oldest friend here.
@asheland- I will remember that Darkside gathering with the cupcakes for the rest of my life. (For those who don't know, that's me in the blue shirt in the background there, and @Aethelred peering through his loupe at one of my coins.)
@Oldhoopster - RIC-299, I'm told. (PS- happy 20th anniversary yourself!)
@Morpheus1967 - thanks.
@mwallace- I do remember our recent swap, but like you, the earlier stuff eludes me for the most part.
Happy anniversary !
I know you from CT (where I've been a member for 16 years now) more than here (where I am kind of new), and I love your coin hat, your sense of humor and generosity !!
Thanks for being who you are
Since we are more In US-coin-Land here at CU, should I win the prize I'd go for coin J
Thanks again
Hey, LordM! How's your hat!?
Congrats on 20 years!
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
Happy A. We did plenty of deals. Two I remember (as agentjim007) was a group of hard time tokens in old paper envelopes and a French Lucky Angel 20F gold I told you I estimated MS62 and you sent it to PCGS came back 64. See everyone I don’t know what I’m talking about.
Congrats on 20 years!! I've enjoyed talking about toned gold with you. You also sent me some of your flattened coins! I really like the look of coin I, so that's my choice!
@Cucumbor - good to see you here. I now know you on three different sites!
@dpoole- hey, oldtimer! My hat is empty since I sold all the holey coins in 2013. But I'm starting over with that- I've got a little cork board with a bunch of new holey pieces pinned to it, so eventually the hat will ride again! (Sans gold this time.)
@jimtyler- I still think of you as agentjim and didn't recognize the new alias! I sure remember that French angel, and rather wish I'd kept it. Thanks for all the deals we've done.
@jwitten- I think of you before anyone when I see nicely toned gold.
@asheland, @dpoole & @JimTyler - y'all didn't specify a prize pick.
Surprise me.
Hey Rob,
Congratulations and Happy Anniversary, dude. Miss your posts. You are far too cool to stay away from us Darksiders!
Thanks for the generous chance. You sent me a holed coin about 3 years ago, thanks again, buddy.
My prize choice.
E,
See ya around Rob.

I have come to rely on your sage advice and thyme-ly input on all topics of interest.
If I become the "fortunate one" I would love coin "B" and if whomever the lucky squire is that wins, if they don't pick coin "C", hit me up with the details of procurement.

Happy 20th anniversary LordM. You are most generous of both your coins and your time. You are a shining example that the rest of us in this hobby can strive for. If chosen I would go for coin A as I would like to expand my collection into the ancients. Congrats for 20 years.

Happy Anniversary, @lordmarcovan; here's to many more good years on Cointalk and Collectors Universe.
I think you gave me one of my earliest likes on Cointalk when I shared one of my junk-box finds from the St. Augustine coin show.
Here's the coin that was the subject of the first "like" you ever gave me.
Regardless, if I somehow won this drawing, I'd choose "Coin A" as my prize. I've had some pretty bad luck on being outbid on some Trajan denarii in the past.
Happy Anniversary and Hearty congrats on 20 years M'Lord. I have not been a member on here very long, know you much better on CT. If I am fortunate to be chosen, my preference is United States: silver Morgan dollar, 1904-O. Thankyou for a wonderful oportunity.
Hope for the best, expect the worst, take what comes
Happy anniversary!
I have a 2019 set of your elongated coins and they are nice. Thanks for the chance @lordmarcovan ! I would pick B if I were lucky to win. I don't collect much world but that coin just looks so interesting.

Happy anniversary and congratulations on the tremendous knowledge you have shared by averaging 6 posts a day over the entire 20 years.
I was able to take these photos for you. I know the coin has moved on from you, but I still think it was a privilege to get to see it and take some pictures.
Should I be lucky enough, I would take that gorgeous Canadian large cent in Entry H '.
Happy Anniversary ! I would choose Coin E since I love Morgans and have never owned a New Orleans one but really any of the coins would be great. Thank you!
Congratulations Rob! I don't know if I could get back into coin talk if I wanted to, been at least a decade...might have gotten purged? Your posts have always been some of the most enjoyable. I remember your tale of mding the Chinese coin really well. I bought my first ancient from you, in either 2008 or 2009, a Constantine issue. Just had it out and in hand three days ago, actually!
If I were to win I'd like Coin B. While there's a lot of great options that would get me a full century back father on my long term goal of at least one coin for every dated year. Oldest currently is 1623.
Edit: here's my scan of it
Happy 20th Anniversary Lord M!
You are truly a key contributor on these forums, and Coin Talk as well. You are a very generous, knowlegable and good person.
Your trademark for many years was your very cool “holey coin hat” avatar!
Your BST prices are very reasonable and fair. I have made several coin purchases from you over the years. These purchases have included silver dollars, half dollars and junk silver. The dealings and communication were always problem free and pleasant.
Here is a picture of an awesome 1916-D Walker that I bought from you. And also, some of your generous additional gifts.
I am looking forward to your next 20 years on the forums!
I choose coin E. Very nice Morgan Dollar.
Thank you for the chance!
Happy anniversary! I like the CC seated dime as a 100 year coin for me!
We have happily traded coins in the past and you even sent me some fossilized sharks teeth! We even might share more too!
Happy anniversary! Have enjoyed reading your posts and looking at your coins as a new forum member. I would be thrilled to win coin D - it would go straight into my YN son’s type set album and would also be his first CC mint coin.
Happy Anniversary LordM, wow, 20 years!!! Lots of fun on the forums and lots of cool deals and trades over the years for sure! The holey coin vest and hat though are legendary!!!
Very generous giveaway... I like Coin I... fun!!!!

Happy 20th anniversary LordM. If chosen I would like coin E. Congrats on 20 years.
Happy Anniversary!
When I joined, you were the first one to greet me on here, and even made me coin photo (avatar?) I use for this site from a Stolberg 2/3 Thaler. We've definitely had several transactions over the years, off the top of my head I remember a Canadian Ferry Token.
The Eisbaren Strassenbahn token (I) is my favorite from that series!

Happy Anniversary LordM.... We go back the full twenty years....And I have the frog love token and a megalodon tooth from you. Both of which I treasure. If I win, I would like Coin D....CC coins have always fascinated me, probably due to the many years I lived in the West. Always good to see you here, and your stories have always been great.
Cheers, RickO
Happy Anniversary Lord M! Always enjoyed watching your fluid movement through the vast playing field of numismatics!

I'm not sure if we did any deals 20 years ago... I just rejoined these forums after nearly 20 years!
I would love the steely coin J.
Hi Rob! Congrats on the 20 years...time sure flies and I miss ya around here. We have done a couple deals here and there, I kept all of the darkside coins in the binder I got from you in the 2X2's as your hand writing is much better than mine.
Favorite memory? Hands down the Yap Stone Money caper...a great chase and a lot of fun to watch unfold! I thought of it a couple weeks ago as I passed an antique place that had a large round millstone out front and thought 'If only'
Anyway here it to another 20! If I happen to be selected Coin B or C. Thanks for the chance!
Kevin
WOW! I know that we've never met as I'm a new Novice but the best and happiest Anniversary to you, sincerely.
Happy Anniversary, I think we did something over bust or seated dimes.
So I pick that.
Happy Anniversary Rob, I think my most recent deal with you was a very nice Hawaii dime in Fine with the trademark Lord M CircCam look. And you always toss in something neat with the purchase.. a nice red wheatback cent for instance. Should I win, I would like the polar bear token, very whimsical.
Happy anniversary @lordmarcovan !
I enjoy your posts and appreciate your generosity.
I was lucky enough to win one if your giveaways a few years back.
Coin H would be my choice.
Thank you!
Happy anniversary!!
We've never really crossed paths but I'm always grateful for the opportunity in your giveaways.
Coin E
Happy anniversary. Can't remember any specific deals we've done, but coin B is really nice.
@JoeyCoins - thanks.
Thanks, @ZoidMeister. Good to see you here as well as CT.
Thanks, @beaver96. Best of luck to you in the drawing. Good pick. The Trajan is one of the more valuable coins here, relatively speaking, as I had it priced at $73. That might be a little high, but not by much.
@EagleScout2017 - thanks. That's a handsome Charles II. It might be well worn, but it has a nice, wholesome look- it's a "CircCam"!
@expat- I recognize you from CoinTalk, of course. I think you won a Churchill crown in one of my giveaways, right?
Good luck, @Kliao. I always like seeing folks post my elongates. Coin B (the Ernestus) is a bit of an enigma- I have no idea what it's worth. I don't have much in it, as I acquired it as part of a bigger lot. I had priced it at $76 (the cost of the plastic plus a little bit), but that was admittedly pulling a number out of thin air.
@ronsanderson- your "ShimmerVision" GIFs are amazing. Thank you for doing that 1847 proof Liberian cent for me. I miss that. It's a definite "seller's remorse" coin for me. (The top pop at both PCGS and NGC, last I looked.) Nice to see it again, up there dancing and shimmering like that. I got that one in a swap with @thebigeng - where is he? Mark, now that you’ve been tagged, I hope you’ll show up to the party!
Oh- as to my average post count over the years, I got a big haircut off my total. I lost more than 20K off my count when they switched to this platform in 2016. On the old platform, which kept a Top Ten members list by post count, I think I had made it up to Number 6th or 7th-ranked all-time, as of the transition.
@BillyKingsley - I remember that coin! Though it's a relatively common Constantine I campgate, I think it's handsome. In fact, that coin was my type coin for Constantine the Great in my first (2007-08) Roman emperors collection. I'm happy to see you still have it.
@CoinHoarder - Thanks for posting that, and for the kind words. Hey, that deal was fairly recent!
@erwindoc- I look forward to it.
@bigtree- good luck!
@illini420 - you are the only dealer or numismatist from whom I have ever purchased a four-figure coin, to this day. (I later sold it to buy my daughter's first car, and will be staying down in two- and three-figure territory where I belong from now on). So that should say something about my confidence in you. Your past help with those neat "shadowbox" style Photoshop templates was also appreciated.
@jdmern- what can you tell us about the date on that Eisbaren token, if you know? "1920s" was a semi-educated guess on my part. I don't know very much about them. I remember the Canadian ferry token- that wasn't too long ago. @savoyspecial wrested it from my grasp, but it was a happy addition to my Eclectic Box collection up until then. Kinda wish I’d kept it, now.
I also bought a New Zealand token from you not too long ago. Still have that one.
@Treashunt - I recognize your name from CT, of course.
@farthing- I remember you from the old Darkside days. One funny memory I have is when I made a typo and typed your username without putting the "h" in it! LOL
@moursund - I do not remember you, but welcome back, oldtimer! You are senior to me by a few months!
@elkevvo- we go way back, though I'll be darned if I can remember a single transaction. I know there have been several. Oh, boy, "Operation Stone Holey"- the Yap money caper you mentioned- sure was a hoot, wasn't it? It would be fun to dig that one up again, though heaven knows if any of the pictures would still be working.
@Observation - good luck!
@drizzt- I do not remember any transactions, but knew you were an oldtimer. You're one of the few people that still wear their old stock avatar from the ancient boards. I thought you were senior to me, but I see now you're a 2002 arrival. You'll be at this milestone soon, too.
@kaz- I remember the Hawaii dime now that you mention it, but the transaction with you that sticks out the most (if my memory isn't failing me) is this PCGS MS62 BN 1818 cent you bought from me around two years ago. Do I have that right? Man, I miss that coin. It's welcome back here again if you tire of it. I think it's from the Randall Hoard, like I guess most UNC survivors of that date were. I always thought this one had a nice amount of trace red on it for a BN coin.
@mannie gray - I don't remember what you won! But that's what's been kind of fun about this "reminiscence" thread. There's so much that I don't remember- it's nice to have had some reminders.
@Mjwags - your name is starting to look a bit familiar now. Won one yet? Maybe this will be the one! Best of luck.
Ahhh... good ol' @ricko. Prince among forum members. Could always count on you for a kind word and friendly comment, even when nobody else was paying attention or everyone else was sick of me. You have always had something nice to say. And man, let me tell you, there have been times I needed that, and greatly appreciated it. Thank you.
@lordmarcovan .... You have always been a favorite poster of mine... Oh yeah... I also have elongated coins from you, a Merc dime and two wheat cents - right here by my computer. Keep on posting my friend. Cheers, RickO
Where’s @MadMarty? He still around?
@savoyspecial- Greg, where are you, man?
@stork? Fortunately I still see her over on CT now and then.
@newbiecollector, @carlwohlforth, @Russ, @MFH - RIP, brothers. You are gone but not forgotten.
Don't forget Brad Swain RIP. I can't recall his forum name.

Yes! Brad Swain! Krause catalog quick-draw artiste! Dude could have a World coin ID-ed in the time it took you to start typing. Wasn’t he @tbirde56?
Speaking of T-birds, what about @66Tbird? John Z-something. He still around? He bought two of my very nicest 19th century proof coins many moons ago. One was a PR64 RD 1868 2c piece. The other was a PR63 CAM 1898 Barber half from the Benson collection. Both were PCGS. I think that 2c piece deserved CAM, but it was graded before PCGS gave that designation to 2c pieces.
Congratulations on the anniversary!!!
I can't even remember all the deals and interactions. I did run across one of your old wooden nickels not too long ago though which was totally cool. I seem to remember a little 1/4 real that we swapped back and forth a couple times too. And the holey vest! I know I sent you something for it once, I still have the 'cointributed' graphic stored somewhere on my laptop.
I still pop in once in awhile! I've not been focusing on the coins, though I have a few newps from an overseas auction to organize. Distractions abound. Among other things I ended up with some baby chicks in the basement--doing things like building a coop took time. I THOUGHT I'd work on my coins as my photo stuff is in the basement. Oops. Turns out chicks are both entertaining and dusty. Oh well.
As for the giveaway, well the Trajan would hearken back to the days when it was very popular to collect BBL coins in some quarters (bare breasted ladies). In response I bought a few ND (nekkid dude) coins and Mars there looks pretty nekkid.
I tend to blame my Albanian coin collection on the fact it was a failed One From Every Country attempt, namely it was too hard to pick just one coin from a country and Albania was pretty early in the alphabet. That said, more than one of the Albanian coins fit the ND theme. Punchline to that was I did also end up collecting a lot of mother/baby themed medals which oddly enough also includes a few BBLs, though they tend to be involving babies so not quite what the other people were collecting back in the day.
I like the polar bears a lot too though.
Can't find the cointributed one, but this one instead!
Gosh, that one's better. Memory eludes me now, but I think you're probably the only Seal holder with gold star and diamonds! LOL
