I have had this Walking Liberty half for a long time. I bought it from a forum member on the BST about 15 years ago. It's not particularly high grade (MS63) but I have always loved it for the lilac toning, which gives it a lot of character. I tend to like coins with "character", meaning that they are distinguishable from other coins for one reason or another.
This is a nice coin! I remember seeing this issue in the Red book in the 1960's as a kid and I couldn't understand why this coin was so inexpensive in low grades and so expensive in high grades. I compared it to my dad's 1882-cc, which was more money in low grades and didn't go up too high in the upper grades. It seemed unfair to the 1882-cc.
I learned years later that there aren't too many 1892-s in higher grades and lots of 1882-cc.
Thanks! It's even nicer in hand. I wish I had a Trueview of this coin. It took 3 tries to get the right Stone Mountain. This coin also illustrates how the toning on lightly circulated coins can really bring out the details of the devices.
Time to get this thread rolling again! Sorry for the prolonged absence. Here's an SLQ graded MS-62FH by NGC. Anyone disagree with the full head designation?
