I was so eager to have found a "white insert" first generation PCGS slab. . .

I totally messed up!
It kind of looks like it was a rare white insert PCGS first-generation coin, so I hit the BIN.
It wasn't until I thought about it I realized I was wrong.
Do you know how?
Well. . .
All first-generation white label PCGS coins start with the number "108". PCGS only used this insert for the first week or so of grading. It could have been! It should have been! Yet- nope. It isn't.

Dam that adrenaline flow.
It is a tough decision when you see what you believe to be one thing and it turns out to be the another.
We all have been there.
I hope you did not over spend.

Kennedys are my quest...
I am sure it can easily be sold to another slab collector... Good luck, Cheers, RickO
Yeah, the photo also shows ribbed paper, and only the green labels used that kind of paper. You'll come out ok, though.
I always look at the 5 if there is one in the number...

I see that! The five and the six look so different than later rattlers, for sure.
Still, the best 'tell' is the serial number starting with 108.

Not all 108's are hits, only some... they switched midstream.
I saw the one you BINed when it was listed. Guessing RE got a ton of rattlers in, they've been posting a LOT of them lately.

"Not all 108's are hits, only some... they switched midstream."
Excellent point, yet for sure if it isn't 108 it can't be a white label rattler.

I have almost made that mistake.
That insert looks like used toilet paper.
the way things are going lately, by the time it shows up, MS63 81-Ss will be bidding at $100, anyway.

Morgans and Peace dollar pricing has gone nuts.
What used to cost for an MS65 is now MS64 pricing on generics.

All white rattlers are 108xxxx
Not all 108xxxx are white rattlers

Hey, at least you have an 1881-S dollar which is super rare in uncirculated grades
Not a terrible looking coin, on the postive side.

Thanks, but I've never returned a coin I purchased where it is my fault.

While you may have missed out on the slab I like the coin. It looks pretty solid for the grade.
You idiot!
I wish I had a Mercury dime for every time I nearly made the same mistake. The faded OGH labels can surely lead to an itchy trigger finger!
Damn, had to post again to get off the 666 number……
High praise, indeed.

I don't think that is a terrible buy, really...
the slab looks very dirty.
It matches the toning on the coin.
Hey! Maybe that'll be a new trend... Coins that match the inserts.

Have we officially put the piece of wisdom aside forever?
"Buy the coin not the holder"
Not when you make the purchase specially to get a holder you don’t have.
What dirt pile was that hidden under?
A few feet away from a Stella.

Does that purchase fall under the new "Buy the holder not the coin" theory?
Not that you would have been wrong purchasing holders a couple years ago. Anyone purchasing coins in those has probably done well. I am curious how one might determine the actual value of the one in the OP when making the purchase or sale. Kind of have the same thoughts on toned coins. Just awful subjective in my opinion... again not saying right or wrong.
If you needed the holder above how would you determine how much to pay? Actual numismatic value of coin + holder?
Braddock is probably a better source of information on the rarity and value of various holders to those that collect them. I would guess you'd have to consider any perceived premium over the value of the coin.
