Cherry pick. At one time I was a bust half collector, never had luck finding better varieties

Collected bust halves for about a decade from early 2000s until sometime around 2012. Then coin lieutenant helped me sell my set and I moved into other interest. Always had fun with these coins but never seemed to find any good ones hiding away.
I still buy some when they call to me and I probably have a dozen or so in my accumulation of coins.
Today I finished up a deal with a local dealer, had first shot on a large collection he had just purchased. As an afterthought I put this 1828 half into the pile. Price was right and the coin looked nice. Got home and when organizing my purchases thought it would be fun to attribute a bust half again.
Well now I have finally found an r5 or better bust half. An O105 in AU58. Probably #2 in the census from what I can tell. My pictures are horrible but best my outdated cell phone in my dark office are going to get. In hand the coin has nice luster and some good edge colors. Probably dipped or lightly wiped at some point but very attractive

Lovely coin, nice going !
Nice pickup!
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

Super pickup
That's good one!
Wow, an R5 and with excellent eye appeal, great buy! Love it when dealers give you first dibs on collections.

I am the exact same way. Bust halves were always my favorite US coin because of their beautiful and classic American-esque design. And it might get me crucified by the bust half nut club, but I personally find all the variety attribution to be a boring chore (Although I see why some people are allured to it).
I would rather assemble an R-1 date set with great eye appeal in AU-MS than an Overton set that will take 25 years to complete and pay $$$ for R5+ low grade coins. Although finding that your coin is a rare variety is definitely an exciting experience.

That’s awesome.
BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
Neat how sometimes things will just drop into your lap unexpectedly. Thanks for sharing.
Yup. That's been happening to me lately as I discover SLH die marriages.
Nice find and that is a great looking coin. Cheers, RickO
Escellant!! I collected a bust half date set in the 1970's before varieties became the norm. I do not know what Overton numbers I have. I still have this set 1802-1839.
Nice looking.
Very nice!

Inadvertent cherrys are always sweeter.
I had three when I was a YN, all I could possibly afford at the time. Still a series I like but find it too expensive for the availability.
Cool find!
