Traded a stack for two rolls of quarters, which is the limit at my bank. I have wash to do. I accumulated a jar full working the college plant sales. There was no place to list them in the campus deposit sheet, so I swapped them for paper when counting out. Almost all gone now.
December 2019, in Ecuador. They use the US dollar, and Sac and similar dollars circulate widely. I was on a group trip, and the last night we all had dinner and got change in these dollar coins. Almost all of the group, from the USA, had no idea that these were legal tender back home, and were reluctant to believe it when one of our guides insisted they are good US money and I backed him up. (I am tempted to go back to Ecuador and try and work on a circulated Sac set...)
Some years ago I used to take the bus to work, and for a while the fare was $1. The Sac made a perfect bus token, and it worked far more reliably than paper dollar bills or fare cards which usually took multiple cycles through the reader and then still failed a lot. The coin, drop it in, ding, fare taken. It was great!
I wish they circulated more. I like using cash, and there ought to be a coin that is worth at least a tiny bit.
It has been many, many years since I have spent a dollar coin. The only time I have got them in change, is when I saw them in a cash register and asked for them. All the dollar coins that I have received, reside in jars and tubes. Never even think of spending them.
They have lots of potassium, and you don't want to have low potassium.
I like them bright yellow with a hint of green. At the slightest sign of being bruised or overripe they go in the trash. Luckily they are cheap enough.
No No No.... That's when you make them into Banana Bread silly

I think it was in the early 2000s when I used them to buy some gas. The attendant asked me to not use them in the future because they were such a hassle.
I’m sure I have used them, it I can’t remember when. Probably in college in the early 2000s when Sacs were newish and I carried change.
Probably haven’t used one in my daughter’s entire life (11yrs) but the kids are familiar with them because they’re around the house.
If I put a $5 bill in the vending machine at my work for something that only a dollar or so I get change back that includes Sacajaweas, Susan B Anthony’s or President dollars. I usually spend them in the same vending machines.
Back in the sixties when I was dating my wife I would actually spend Morgan and Peace dollars from my collection on a date if short on funds. When your funds were replenished with a paycheck you go to the bank and replace them.

Periodically at the little local store here. When the Presidential Dollar series was going I would buy boxes of them looking for the good ones of course. No Interest in the Sac Dollars so I would spend them at the stores in town for whatever. I got the nickname "Dollar Man." Anyway, after awhile nobody would accept them. It actually made me mad. I told them that they were required by law to accept them. Legal tender and all. Forget that. A few times I just set the coins on the counter rounded to the dollar and walked out without getting the change. So......I have a LOT of dollar coins. Wait till hard times hit......they'll gladly take them then.
In NYC there is a law that requires merchants to accept any and all cash with the only exception being bills greater than $20. If someone refuses to accept my dollar coins in NYC and are rude, I'm happy to give a call to NYC's 311 to make a report and NYC can issue a fine to the business.
Does this mean that if I went to buy a car costing $25,000 in NYC at at local auto seller that I could take in $25,000 in coin dollars and they they would have to take them? I never knew that such a law could exist. Used to be and may still be elsewhere, that the merchant set the terms of sale. How about banks? Do banks have to take coins as deposits or payments? I walked into my one bank with $500 in half dollars and nearly got kicked out, until I told them I would close all my accounts if they did not accept them.
Halves and dollar coins, do not circulate much in my area, most banks don't have any when I ask, but you can order them from the federal reserve $1000 at a time.
The last dollar coin that I spent was an Ike dollar for a waitresses tip in a casino last week.

About 7-10 years ago when I would occasionally annoy a retailer. If we could just discontinue the $1 bill then I would of course use them every week since I would get them in change.
As would many others.
Now since cash is used less, the efficiencies we would gain eliminating the dollar bill have been rendered moot and now it is cheaper to keep dollar bills in circulation.

I got one from my first USA visit, back in 2003, from some Miami mall bookstore (Sawgrass Mills, Books a million). I bought a few Stephen King novels and payed in cash and I got the 1 dollar coin plus some smaller denominations.
Almost everyday - the last stimulus money that came out in the spring - i turned that into dollar coins so i got 2 boxes
I haven't found anything really good yet. So far, found a 79 wide rim and about 8-10 NIFC. The 2 boxes i got are completely different from one to the other. One box was mostly new 90% Garfield and Hayes and the other was more used and about 30-40% SBAs. My best find once was a wounded eagle.
I probably have gone thru 800 so far and naturally I only go to about 10 stores on a regular basis. Its not like i kill the cashiers with them, I probably never carry more than 10 of them at any given time. Some cashiers when they see me know what's in my pocket. It's very interesting that other cashiers don't know what to do. Some have never seen any before, even older cashiers like 60+. Others throw them right into the quarters. 2 cashiers told me they were taking them home, maybe they they were rare to them ??? If I went to them everyday - they would have to give up bringing them home. Had one cashier that was clueless that gave them back to me in change. I corrected him how to count money. I think stores don't teach young cashiers on what to do when they get halves or dollar coins.
I like to leave what I call a numismatic-tip. One Ike, one sac, one SBA, one Kennedy half. With all of those “rare” coins maybe I spark some interest in the hobby. In reality, it probably annoys the servers (not the intent)
Anytime I get one I spend it in the self-service checkout machine at the supermarket. It's a good way to get rid of any loose change without paying a coinstar percentage.
I was looking at prices for the four piece 2007 proof presidential sets and realized they weren’t worth more than face value. I ended up saving one set and breaking up 9 sets and throwing them into my change jar for coin star.

A little off topic but here goes; When the paper bills started to change from what I consider the classic design to what we use now.....I started saving "Small Portrait" bills that I came across. After awhile I thought forget it, spend them! Merchants think they are countetfit. They won't take them....WHATEVER.
I do the same thing. I've been putting them back for many years. It's like a savings account to me. Last week I bought a rare car (1987 Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe) and paid for it with $100 dollar bills all 1995 or earlier. The seller was an old fart (like me) and new the bills were real, but I bet his bank did a doubletake when he made his deposit!
I got a roll of SBAs when they first came out, and tried to spend one at a local grocery store. The cashier refused to take it saying that she didn't have a slot in the register drawer for dollar coins. I asked her to call the manager. He came out, looked at the coin, and said, yep, it's a dollar, but since we don't have a slot in the drawers for it, we won't take it.
I ended up handing them out to kids at a local coin show later that year.
The Federal Reserve says they have enough $1 coins in Inventory to last nearly 22 Years.
Current inventory is approximately $1.04 Billion of $1 coins.
A decrease of $50 Million $1 coins is 2020...
Release them and encourage people to start using them. If the public uses them enough then they will have to get rid of the paper $1. Probably won’t happen but I like dollar coins.
