I recently found this in storage. This is the first trading card or any type that I owned. It was the mid-80s during the height of the Garbage Pail Kids collecting era. Kids in my 3rd grade class would bring them to school, and one guy gave me this beat-up Joe Blow sticker to get me started. I begged my mom to take me to the convenience store to pick up some packs, and I was hooked. We later discovered our LCS that became our go-to place to buy complete sets of GPK, and then a couple years later I discovered that basketball cards were a thing and the rest was history.
So the fact that this is the actual first card I ever owned is pretty cool to me. And I know that it's in a non-recessed screwdown holder, but obviously condition isn't an issue here. so I don't care about that.
Some incredible pieces being shared here. Great backstories and tons of variety. That what makes these forums so much fun for me. The variety of what ppl collect.
For me it’s really an easy choice. 1987 was the year I started collecting cards. Topps was routinely available at the corner store and everywhere else. Donruss required a trip to one of the LCS and were a buck a pack by late summer when I started. Fleer was nowhere to be found for under $2 a pack and even then there just wasn’t much to be found. If the LCS had any it was wax packs only. Since I got back into collecting in 2011 after 20yr hiatus, I have had the opportunity to truly relive my 1987 collecting days - ripping many, many boxes of these 3 issues with friends. Pulling the Seitzer is still a thrill (he was THE card to have from the set back in late 87).
I was able to secure this (to me) incredible 1987 Fleer rack display - full of the red rack packs sold exclusively at Toys R Us.
Why I never ran into these packs during my visits there is beyond me. Probably because I didn’t think of cards when we went to TRU. It was all about NES and Atari games, Transformers and Dungeons & Dragons books.
Just makes this all the better to me. A piece of history, if you will, of one of my favorite baseball card issues ever. It is the only one I have ever seen. I have the outer case too. Even tho I finally have the card room built out for the most part, I have balked at actually setting up the stand as I want to preserve the entire piece in its original state.
Conundrum - Loving my unopened baseball card collection....but really like ripping too
Here's the item in my collection that gives me the most satisfaction and joy. My Dad gave me this jersey as a birthday gift in 2010. I spent the next four years designing the frame, gathering all of the jersey cards (with only gray swatches) including finally collecting all of the Ripken Letter cards, and then getting the framing material made and put together. It measures 40" x 48" and weighs about 40 pounds! About a year later when my second child was born, I had to build a large wooden case for it so I could safely store it away since my card room had to turn into a nursery (worth it). I'll bring it back out and hang it on the wall once I'm convinced my kids won't somehow destroy it (LOL). In the meantime, I like looking at the pictures of it!

Thanks for sharing. I was lucky enough to see Cal Ripkin play at Camden Yards in one of his games in the streak...and I kept the ticket stub!! It still brings me a thrill to remember seeing him play!
Nice job!
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one. Live long, and prosper.
For me it's not a single item but it does all revolve around a single card. The first cards I ever bought were 1979 Topps football. I had already become a Cowboys fan thanks to the influence of a couple of friends at school and all I wanted to find was a Roger Staubach. I bought pack after pack, but nothing. Finally, my best friend came to school and told me that he had gotten a Staubach the day before, I couldn't believe it when he took out his box of cards and showed me. He was a Redskins fan, hated the Cowboys, so we quickly went to work trying to figure out what would be my first ever trade. It's a long story that I wrote about in my blog if anyone is interested, https://staubachcollection.blogspot.com/2021/04/where-it-all-began.html
Ever since that trade there has been no card that captured my attention like the 1979 Staubach. I collect it in any form I can find, graded, ungraded, on the front and back of unopened packs, Topps Vault proofs, some art pieces, honestly, anything. Here's a small groupings of some of my 79's
Collecting anything and everything relating to Roger Staubach
Here's one of my favorite Gretzky items. The cards along the bottom are from his Edmonton Oilers days. The Topps rookie has come loose after all these years. I hope the other cards stay put.

So I was born in 57 & from NJ, my brother was a yanks fan, and I eventually became a huge Mets fan.
But Mickey Mantle was always that iconic figure to me there was something just about him he had to "IT" factor.
I've always collected & back in 87 ish I had a card store & did some shows.
So I'm set up at a show in Tampa FL. 1992 & Mantle is signing.
Now I collected Gartland plates & signed figurines, but in 89 I purchased this Mantle sports impressions plate called "Greatest Switch Hitter" & thought it was great.
Now anybody collecting & doing auto's back then knew he did not sign many things & these plates were one of them. Listed on show flyer..
No bats, sports imp plates, etc etc..
But I had to try.
My buddy Andy is set up next to me, he says no way u are getting that signed.
I had a back up photo that I left at table just in case.
I get in line, nervous & keeping item in bag until I get up to Mickey. I put item down & Greer his agent says no, as does mick, I act like I didn't know, Mick says get another item & come back.
I put on my sad puppy face.. ( Thx drama class) & slowly turn away.. THEN..
Mickey says literally, Fuck it, come back. Heart is racing.... Then
The gold one is the Sports impression preprinted auto.. The blue one is the show autograph which came out absolutely beautiful !
Then recently got it lettered up.
So if people tell you no, don't give up.
Pete
Pete,
That’s an awesome story. Greer was a solid agent for Mickey. I guess even more than an agent but she obviously loved him and did a lot to help him, for sure.
I just wanted to share this piece as it has connections to both your birth state and birth year. 😉
Hope you enjoyed seeing it; I’ve not seen more than a handful over the years.
All the best,
Tim
Tim.. I've never seen that. Sweet.
Even if Newark area sucked Lol
I'm a Jersey shore kid. Bricktown.
Right by Point Pleasant boardwalk and Seaside boardwalk which I spent most of my summers at it was an awesome time and we had Bruce Springsteen it doesn't get any better than that !
Damn Sandy killed my childhood area.
Hey, Pete!
I had a reuben at Kelly’s about a month ago!
Down the shore all the time in my younger days: Osprey, D’Jai’s, Bar A, Boathouse, JENKS!
I got no time for the corner boys Down in the street making all that noise Or the girls out on the avenue 'Cause tonight I want to be with you Tonight I'm gonna take that ride Across the river to the Jersey side Take my baby to the carnival And I'll take her on all the rides 'Cause down the shore everything's all right You and your baby on a Saturday night You know all my dreams come true When I'm walking down the street with you
Love me some E Street sound…

I've got a handful of pieces that are very meaningful to me. Some have decent monetary value and others do not, but that doesn't matter at all is terms of what they mean to me. Here are two off the top of my head...
Todd Tobias - Grateful Collector - I focus on autographed American Football League sets, Fleer & Topps, 1960-1969, and lacrosse cards.

Some really cool framed items on this thread, with cards!
My wife put this together for me, cards courtesy of my son who was 12 at the time. Will always remind me of watching the Series with him.
That's awesome! Even though they beat my Indians, I was very happy to see the Cubbies finally win a World Series. I'm a fan of baseball first ahead of a fan of any team. It's extra special that your wife and son put it together. Cool piece!

Thank you. It was a great Series. In fact, we adopted the Indians as our "American League team" that we follow and traveled to Cleveland for a game in 2018. Great franchise, I hope they win one soon.
First off, this is no garden-variety thread. I truly dig the hodgepodge of items that mean so much to those who have chimed in. Super stuff, and I really hope I'm not the last one to post.
I have owned my contributions for about half an hour......because I just won them last night.
The annual Masters Champions Dinner is held every Tuesday of Masters week and brings past champions together for a night of camaraderie and some of the best food & drink imaginable. During the evening, Masters flags are passed around among the champs like hotcakes. Because it is an elite brotherhood, the quality, location and presentation of signatures is generally (and relatively) top-notch.
These two dinner flags come from the collection of a past champion who won the Masters in 1971 -- the year before I was born. And he lives in my hometown. And he just so happened to have one from 2014, the year I went to Augusta for the first time. Suffice to say, coming in 2nd place was not an option last night. The big 3 laid some ink in the center logo.
But then I thought, well, pop tarts, if I'm gonna blow my wad tonight then I might as well do it properly -- so I snagged his undated flag as well with a Tiger on it.
And do you see ACabrera on both flags? That's Angel Cabrera, the winner in 2009. Good thing he's on there, because I would not be able to lasso him myself for quite some time.

The one item in my collection that I enjoy the most, while not the most valuable monetarily, is this:
.
.
It's an intact 2015 postseason ticket sheet from my season ticket account. It's one of 2 that I have framed. One is hanging in my card room, the other is in my TV room. I attended every postseason home game during the back to back World Series runs, which finally culminated in a championship in 2015. The memories of watching those teams come back every time I look at the ticket sheets.
This is another item in my collection that I enjoy immensely:

This is incredible!! One of the best threads ever, IMO!! The stories behind the items are great.
Always looking for Mantle cards such as Stahl Meyer, 1954 Dan Dee, 1959 Bazooka, 1960 Post, 1952 Star Cal Decal, 1952 Tip Top Bread Labels, 1953-54 Briggs Meat, and other Topps, Bowman, and oddball Mantles.

I have this one also.

Probstein was auctioning off all 5 sheets of the 75 set individually, about 3 years ago, with staggered ending times. The Brett sheet was the 3rd sheet if I remember correctly. Maybe the 2nd. Anyway, I was saving all of my bullets for the Brett sheet, so didn't really bid very aggressively for the first sheet(s) to sell, and they sold for much less than I anticipated. Then, the Brett sheet ended and I ended up with the winning bid for much less than I expected on that one, also, leaving me lots of room in my budget to go for the Ryan/Rose/Reggie sheet. I believe that one was the 5th and final sheet to sell. When it was all said and done, the hammer price on all 5 sheets was roughly what I had guesstimated the Brett sheet to go for by itself. If there had originally been a BIN listing for all 5 sheets with that total, I'd have snapped up the entire set and not even have thought twice about it.
It's interesting to me to see the 75 sheets like that, because it reminds me how very, very few in-game photos were used in that set. Like maybe a couple per sheet.
Neat items!

Great thread! The item in my collection that I enjoy the most is a clear sign version of Randy Johnson's 1989 Fleer rookie card. I chased this one for so long on blind faith that it might exist. It's the one card in my collection that I'm always excited to take another look at.
Thanks! 1989 Fleer was a huge part of my collection as a kid. Growing up my cousin recognized the red tinted Marlboro sign on some of our RJ cards so tracking this one down felt really special. This card and really all its variations are still fun for me. I admit to being overly obsessed with the card though 😀
