Wow indeed, I never got into deeply PL Philly coins as they blur the line between proofs. Branch mint on the other hand always makes my heart flutter. That’s very nice.

Hmmm....

High quality coin indeed.... The blemish on the R in America the only glaring issue.. Cheers, RickO
Wow ... Nice one!
Very nice! I’ve always loved PL coinage.
nope. stewart is in first for the set and it is private, this is in the simpson set with hansen in 3rd
Sweet!
Somehow I misread the OP. That should teach me not to post at 2 AM! Anyway, yes, I know the Blay coin very well. Ex: Bowers’ Winthrop sale, Ex: MrEureka . My favorite Barber Dime in private hands!

Wow!
What’s your favorite Barber Dime out of “private hands”?

You have always had an unhealthy and laudable fascination with (the list actually includes hundreds of items) branch mint Barber material in specimen-like appearance and quality. Laphroaig at 2AM? Res Ipsa loquitor!

.
no, it was my mistake. i wasn't posting past 2am but it was close enough!
i edited it for accuracy and posterity, so thanks.

I suppose not completely coincidentally, I bought the OP coin at the Eliasberg sale. ($3600 hammer.) Interestingly, the coin was acquired by Clapp at AUCTION in 1894, one year after it was struck, for a whopping 25 cents! So even back then, it must have been recognized as something special. And not that I think it's anything more than one of the first coins off freshly polished dies, but it IS something special.

those poor unfortunate freshly minted coins from polished dies sure had a brutal survival rate so what they lack in technical merit they make up for in unbelievable scarcity/survival so your point is still well made.
makes me wonder, was it one of the first or last from a set of dies. a lot of pl coins i've seen have severe polishing lines indicating the process of preparing shiny new dies that have pl surfaces differ quite a bit from those from considerably used dies polished up to get rid of little anomalies and to revamp the look of the coins coming out.
seeing it in-hand would clear it up right quick as the difference between a freshly minted pl and one that has been created from revamped polished dies are night and day. to be seen quite often from morgan dollars.
Mikey Likey!!
Holy crap!
most likely grease-filled die as a few letters around the legend have the same malady.
I like
amazing.

If it weren’t for the O I would think it’s a proof
That makes a lot more sense. I thought Blay was mainly copper.
I like it a lot!
.
for this particular set, he has the #1 but it is private.
Awesome coin, dude!
