NEWP: a Liberty Nickel with a decent strike

I have a Denver Mint type set, so for me the Liberty Nickel comes down to one coin only - the 1912-D. This particular issue seems to be found like a lot of the years with flatness in the stars on the obverse and weakness on the lower left corn detail on the reverse. There also seems to be numerous examples out there with alloy toning streaks, which really don't appeal to me. Add in the big bump in pricing for coins graded above MS65, and I am content to have this example as a place holder until I can afford one of those lustrous MS66 coins (someday!). Although, if you look at the coin pictures on coinfacts, I'm still not impressed with the design detail shown on any of the high grade coins pictured.

Nice corn! There should be a Full Corn(FC) designation.
Looks like some MD on the date. It is very well struck.
This is the only graded one I own

It's a great date and has a nice strike.
However the luster seems very subdued for this Denver delivery and the color looks like AT to me.
PF62. Was hoping it would do better

Congrats on the addition to your set @Crackout

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
One of my favorite sets! Fully struck was my focus too when I made it. Sold most of it but kept the keys. Here is a few of the ones I have left. The 12S is one of the best strikes Ive seen.
Nice nickels!

You are correct about the luster, very dull!
Nicely struck examples there along with some great luster and very interesting die cracks on the 'No Cents'!
For a 63 your 12-D is pretty nicely struck.

The weakest points on the Liberty Nickel are star 7 on the obverse and the left corn on the reverse. The hair is generally week on all 1912 coins from each of the three mints.
The strike is well above average on your coin. Not many marks for an MS 63. Perhaps the coin is net graded because the luster is dull and the color appears to be a bit off (the latter can be perhaps explained by the photo, I always like to see a coin in hand).
Disclosure: I was building a set of these in MS 66, have 20 of them and stopped, so I've seen quite a few of these coins.

@Crackout.... That is certainly a very nice 'placeholder'....Good luck on an upgrade. Cheers, RickO
