1955 DDO PCGS MS62BN CAC

hbarbeehbarbee Posts: 202 ✭✭✭✭

I purchased this a couple of years ago. I have never understood why the coin earned such a low grade. The obverse strike is somewhat weak, but none of the other factors would seem to be a problem. I think the eye appeal is super for a 62.

I understand it is difficult to grade from pics, but my images are very representative even though they are through plastic. The white marks on the reverse are in the plastic. Any opinions as to why the grade is so low would be appreciated.

    Luster, or the lack thereof.

To be clear. It’s an incredibly nice coin. For lots of folks this is something they dream of owning. You have an MS CAC’d 55 DD!

Very well might just be undergraded. Crack a lacka send a backa.

It does seem to have excellent eye appeal for the grade. Possibly the grade is limited by the marks on Lincoln’s shoulder.

That looks awfully nice for an MS62. I would suspect that @BryceM has hit upon what PCGS was looking at.

Those marks certainly would NOT limit it to a 62.

Based upon the images, I would have guessed MS63 at a minimum, even with what appears to be slightly subdued luster.

Very nice for a 62. Undergraded IMO.

That is a very nice cent, and if it were a GTG, I would have thought MS63 minimum. Seems to b no luster, but still nice surfaces. Dings on the shoulder, and in the hair behind the ear... but minor. Cheers, RickO

    Very nice coin for 62!

My first guess was the luster may not be that strong. Indeed a nice coin for the grade!

Better to own high end for the grade coins in one’s collection in my opinion.

Before you crack it out, take your phones flashlight to it and rotate it at a lot of different angles.

A lot of the time when I see coins like this that look undergraded, they have a light patch of hairlines somewhere only visible under strong light, and were net graded rather than bagged as the issue isn't noticeable enough to justify such harsh treatment.

It's a very nice 1955 Doubled Die. Aside from the luster I don't know why it did not grade a 63.

I'd be proud to own one like that.

Edited to add: The only thing I can think of is the marks on the shoulder and front of the jacket are more pronounced in hand than in the photo. I still think it is a very nice example.

Whatever the reason (something we aren’t seeing obviously or it should be a 63) I’ll echo the sentiment that it’s a really nice coin for a 62. It’s a grade that can be really unattractive, but that’s a wonderful coin.

I think it ultimately comes down to the sticker. If it will sticker as a 63, I think he would be far better off. CAC is very inconsistent with the gold sticker in my experience, and I have seen many coins receive a green sticker at both X and X+1 grades.

Sure is nice for a 62 grade.

Hopefully, you only paid 62 prices or less. I would be proud to have that coin in my collection, regardless of the grade. Beautiful coin, IMO

That coin would never get kicked out of bed by me, that's really nice! I'm thinking subdued luster, but I've seen coins like that with higher grades.

I've seen very few coins of this date/variety that could be called blazers in the luster department.

I may be alone but I would guess the coin has plenty of luster in hand. If resubmitted I would be more surprised if it came back as a 62 rather than a 64. At least a 63 in my eyes. If the grade don't fit resubmit!

Very nice looking coin. How distracting in hand are the hits on the shoulder, chin and beard ?

Very nice example and agree with others observations.
Nothing wrong with this sweetheart of a coin from my point of view!
I happened to purchase one of these as a retirement gift to myself shortly after an insane period of my life.
Still getting settled in here and haven’t even photographed it yet or shared it.

I appreciate all the comments. It seems the majority opinion is that luster quality may have limited the grade. The PCGS video series discusses the 4 factors considered in grading: Surface Preservation, Strike, Luster and Eye Appeal. Based on my interpretation of those videos either strike or luster or both could have limited the coin. I don’t think the other two were a factor.

Some folks suggested resubmitting, but I am wary of that exercise. I have not resubmitted any PCGS coins, but did resubmit several NGC and ANACS coins for crossover in order to get all my coins that were graded in PCGS holders and was mostly disappointed with those results.

I purchased it directly from an on line dealer for somewhat less than the PCGS value for MS62BN, so I think I will leave well enough alone since I am a “good eye appeal for the grade” when purchasing coins type of guy.

What is your take of the luster as you have the coin in hand? I have a few coins I believe are under graded. I am keeping them the way they are until I decide to sell. At that point I may have them reconsidered for an upgrade. Will have to decide if it is better to keep the old holders and gold stickers or go for the upgrade.

Ownership add a point to all grades, coolness adds one too. If it was a 56 no one would bat an eye at 62, might even scream 58. As a 55doo it is one of the better ones because they have been desirable and manhandled for so long
