1878 Morgan Gold Eagle - by George Thomas Morgan - PCGS PR66DCAM POP 1/0 - Ex. Lorin Gilbert Parmelee, Virgil Michael Brand, Dr. John Hewitt Judd, Bob R. Simpson
This coin is what dreams are made of!
There are only two of these in gold, with the other in the Connecticut State Library.
And what a provenance chain as well. Lots of great numismatists there.
Any idea on how much this is worth now?

Not a big fan of patterns but that coin is breathtaking
Too big for my little dreams. Beautiful coin, thanks for posting.
I love the portrait. It’s better than what made it onto the Morgan Dollar.
The design looks so clean. I'm not certain if it's a difference in how the design size fits the area or if just how it is put together is more efficient. Alternatively, perhaps simply because it is different is why it looks "better".

Shame we can't issue coinage like this for our ASE/AGE programs instead of the current selections. Every couple of years introduce a different one.
Wow, I like
Just beautiful!! A truly impressive gold coin. Cheers, RickO
Beautiful!
I was browsing through eBay and happened across these. They are put out by the Smithsonian. I would love to know who did the die work?
It appears they came in proof and reverse proof versions. One ounce and half ounce gold.
Not to take away from the originals posted these are a nice substitution for those who cannot obtain the originals. I may start looking for these.

I don't like the eagle. Looks a bit wonky.
The obverse is nice though.
