Lincoln Cent 1970-S Large Date DDO FS-101

I decided to pick this example up off of Ebay this week at what I considered a very reasonable price. This variety is rare and does not come to market very often. I feel this example has exceptional eye appeal for the grade and has a CAC sticker for good measure.
I don't focus on varieties nor do I care about registry sets but I decided long ago to use the PCGS Registry Set "Lincoln Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proofs (1909-Present)" as my reference definition of a "complete" collection and this coin is considered by that measure as a major variety.
It is said to be the third scarcest major doubled die in the Lincoln series after the 58 and 69S. Those 2 are also in that registry set but are well beyond my budget…
Perhaps those of you with a sharp eye can comment on what you believe has kept this from attaining a 65 grade. I (and CAC) are happy with the 64, but frankly I have seen many Lincolns in 65 holders that are not as nice.

Congrats! That is a **fantastic **variety and I agree, you made a great deal! I'm not positive but I believe I owned that exact coin which I sold in June of 2001 for $12K. Aspects of the coin are very familiar.
Great acquisition, enjoy!
Thanks. If it is the same coin it may have been resubmitted as the current holder has the Embedded NFC feature so it was graded after Oct 2020. Only 39 coins have been graded 64RD by PCGS and NGC and who knows how many of those are re-submissions. If so, I will take good care of it!
Very cool - congratulations!
That's a Winner,dude.

Nice PU. I believe the spot on the forehead and the deepest cut at 9:30 held it back.
But I also think it wouldn't have even grabbed a 65 without all the hits if it weren't for all that luster.
Awesome coin!
Nice coin, I would say given the numerous small nicks, hits, and spots that the coin is correctly graded. That does not mean that someday it could not upgrade just that from these photos I would not expect it to.
My Collection of Old Holders
Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I'm shocked as many as 39 examples have been certified in any grade, as I believed this variety to be extremely rare. That number must include a bunch of resubmission attempts.
Somewhere in my basement I have a stack of original BU 1970-S cent rolls, I should open them in 20 years at my retirement party.

As a side note, the delivery of this coin was incredibly fast. It was listed on eBay as free shipping from North Carolina. I made the purchase on 5/26 at about 6:30 AM Houston time using PayPal. It was delivered by the USPS mail lady today 5/27 at about 1:00 PM. The box indicated that the seller paid $38. to ship it. Amazing.
Very nice coin.
Hoard the keys.
Nice variety!

Thanks for the comments.
My objective is to acquire the highest grade that can be afforded but at the same time it must have GREAT EYE APPEAL. I believe the eye appeal will make it easier to resell if ever necessary without a long debate over the grade. The green bean also helps solidify the grade if one can get it.
I am surprised at the number of coins that can be viewed for example on the PCGS link to recent completed auctions where the buyer paid an excessive price for a coin that had in my view no eye appeal at all.
Love that date m/m, it is what we looked for when I was a kid for (the small date) to find treasure in circulation. The DD that I had only seen in blurry Coin World photos was a dream

Nice
The '70-S DDO-001 is a very under rated variety IMO.
