Worn Coins With Character

Most collectors would probably pass on a coin with this type of wear when selecting “junk” silver dollars. I know many will say it has lost too much silver from wear. And they would be correct. That really doesn’t bother me.
When I see a coin like this, I like the way that it looks like it has seen many years of heavy circulation in commerce, but has no major damage. It has a pleasing look considering it’s age and wear.
I think about a New Orleans mint worker coming to work on his horse in 1887, and striking this old historical coin during his day of labor.
This is when I get bit by the collector bug. I will happily add this coin to my perma stack of “junk” silver dollars.

She's beautiful! Great patina! If she could only talk!!
Love 'em when they look like that!

I like this look as well. A less circulated example with distracting dings, scratches, or rim damage is not nearly as appealing to my eye.
Just think how many bars it slid across! 🙂
Especially if it stuck around New Orleans for awhile!
Just posted this, but I think it fits here.
Awesome circ cam!
A souvenir that ended up being spent.

Neat coin 🙂
1938 quarter with a fat planchet flaw. Cherrypicked from a coin store for $3. Worn down to G-04, I wonder how many people (if any) noticed the error.

As much as I love luster, a nice circulated coin with original skin is very pleasing...

These kind of worn coins are just plain neat and you don't have to spend a fortune to own one for the most part.

I love this well used coin.

This is true economical history. These didn't just sit in a box somewhere, these made things happen. Perfect.

Nice thread with coins that have seen history through commerce. Cheers, RickO
You gotta love coins that went out and did their job!

That's the kind of worn coins I have the most I'm afraid, not all being so attractive actually

I like Peace and Morgan Dollars with that "Circulated Cameo" look...

That Peace Dollar has spent many a months in my pocket to get that "improved" circulated cameo appearance. When I got it in a junk box, it looked like THIS (below) . . . . . .
I never thought I could carry it enough to get it to look "acceptable" but a little bit of carry in a pocket full of clad quarters did the trick.

eeeek! Seriously though, whatever caused the stains, it was greatly improved by making it a pocket piece and "recirculating" it...

When I first saw it, I thought it was on a work table and got hit with sparks or slag from a welding rig or cutting torch. Those dark areas were slightly raised and felt like metal shavings underneath.

I still carry them around but they spend their time in airtight capsules these days. I'm happy with their current appearance and want to preserve them as they are.
Most folks are amazed by their looks being 99 and 100 years old. Most don't know of the transition between 1921 and 1922. They love that these are consecutive year coins.

I think all your coins here are very attractive and beautiful in their own right, in their own way.
Nice coins @Cucumbor .
This one has a lot of character
I genuinely enjoy certain issues better in various degrees of wear than their uncirculated presentation.
Indian $2.5 and $5 come to mind.
