What a great looking bimetallic cent! I love how the metals perfectly bisect the 19 and 68 in 1968!
This one has the great @FredWeinberg provenance!

What happened there ?

Dime planchet stuck to cent planchet and then struck. Amazing.
Could it be that it's been done on purpose ?
Just curious
I am not really into error coins but this one is a beauty.

I had to look up the Cert. That’s wild! The obv is fantastic.
Costa Rica 5c bonded onto 1 cent. Not something I would have ever guessed or imagined. Congrats!

Fred, do you take Bitcoin
What would a TrueView of a Bitcoin look like?
Wow... Cool error.... had a couple of thoughts when I first viewed it... Did not think of a Costa Rica 5cent bonded on a cent though....Cheers, RickO

Anything is possible but is it likely?
Were there a lot of midnight minting in 1968?
Yes ... Nice error.
Costa Rica 5 Centimos then struck/bonded into reverse of Jefferson 5c:

Being that it is from San Francisco circa 1968, I'm thinking it was part of the infamous safe deposit box contents of a former Mint employee.
1967 USA 1c on Stainless Steel Costa Rica planchet attracts to my magnet in the slab.
I wonder if this was one of the San Francisco "errors" that were found in the State of California safety deposit box sale some years ago? Lots of unbelievable proof errors that may have been the results of shenanigans. I believe Fred W. bought that lot when the state sold it. 1968 may be a bit early, however
Wow that is really neat and interesting!

now that you mention it, why does something like that ring a bell with me? there may be some in some type of TPG holder. i'll think more on this later. i'm far from an expert at cryptocurrency but iirc, there are some physical "coins" issues with the security key encoded into it. something along those lines.

This isn't on @FredWeinberg's website any more. Anyone know if this was sold or will be in an upcoming auction?
"Magnet Envy!"
Great coins!
There WAS a lot of shenanigans in San Francisco around that time.
LSD was everywhere and “Flower Power” was soon to be going to seed in areas around Haight Ashbury.
A lot of crazy history was being made in the local coffee houses with music and poetry too.
It’s not far fetched to imagine that this wonderful coin could be a relic of this very colorful, creative, wild and tumultuous point in time.

That Bonded coin will be in a future Heritage Auction,
probably at FUN '22, but I'm not certain at this time..

Pressroom sports could give some insight for trouble shooting a problem quickly. Ya really have to hand it them.
It's like hide and seek with the union who backs up the mint or vice versa . It's cool though, been there done that.
neat coin.
That coin is just total coolness! Never saw one like it. Not only bimetallic but binational US-Costa Rica (that's a word, right?).
Kind regards,
George
Judging by the date and mint, I think it was one of those "shenanigan" coins that flowed out of SF during that time period.
(Didn't see till later that this was already mentioned earlier.)

Will the slab be updated with the Weinberg provenance?
It would be great to have both the special insert and "Fred Weinberg" provenance attached.
Is there a census of these to keep track of them? Seems like it could be worthwhile if there isn't.
