Draped Bust Half Dollar 1801

EddiEddi Posts: 612 ✭✭✭✭✭

This coin has minor adjustment marks on the obverse and a few light rim taps here and there, as can be seen.

What is you assessment - Will this keep this coin from grading?

Thank you for your opinions!

Appears to be an old cleaning.... not sure if it will grade, could go either way. Good luck and let us know. Cheers, RickO

I have my doubts that that coin will get a straight grade because of an old cleaning. This 1796 half dime failed to get a grade about a decade ago because of cleaning. It has a similar look.

Very nice coin. My kind of coin. NGC might straight grade it. I've seen quite a few early (pre-1891) cleaned coins in straight grades by NGC. It might straight grade today. I don't think that I have seen many, if any, federal coins worn below xf that weren't cleaned in some way or another. Still I would have no problem buying that coin for full grade value, cleaning or no cleaning. Slab or no slab.

@rec78, NGC refused to grade the coin twice. I thought that given the age and rarity plus the fact that most of these coins have been cleaned at some point that this would pass. But nothing doing.

Even so, anyone who collects these kinds of coins will have the knowledge to know that that coin is an extrodinary example and will be very happy to get it. I album collect, so I don't need it in a slab.

It is a nice piece, probably 30-35 details, but the old cleaning may prevent a straight grade.

I have no problem with the little rim stuff (at this grade) or the adjustment marks (although slightly distracting). The fields don’t look right - especially on the reverse. More original surfaces are visible around the devices. Away from the devices the fields have a smoothed-out, polished look.

It’s still a neat, historic coin with a good bit of remaining detail.

Old cleaning might prevent straight grade. Hard to tell from photographs exactly how significant the cleaning will be to TPG. I've gotten an occasional coin like this grade d, but usually not the first time and often no grades.

AFAIK, adjustment marks will never disqualify a coin from receiving a straight grade. I do think a straight grade on that half is unlikely due to cleaning, as others have pointed out. The reverse in particular has a look that often spells trouble with the TPGs.

At the I wanted it for my NGC registry set. Therefore the coin did not fit in my collection. I lost $1,000 on it.

Despite the binary "straight grade" business, based on the photos this rare coin looks like a nice VF to me. If the graders find evidence of an old light cleaning (I don't see it as severe, by any means) then they might knock 5 or 10 points down rather than genuine it. Even if it doesn't straight grade, as long as authentic it has to be at least F15 value imo
