Your Opinions Please - 1861 Seated Liberty Dollar

It is a nice example with a few marks, as can be seen. It has bluish/grey tones and partially reflective surfaces.
Ex Jonathan Kern in the late 80's.
I remember I was very eager to find an example from the Civil War Era, and was very happy to find this example.

Thank you!

I like that one a lot. At first glance the fields bugged me a little.
I enlarged the photo and now I'm thinking market acceptable and just lightly circulated.
    Very nice!

The sharpness is virtually Mint State, but the haze in the fields concerns me. It reminds me of some of the results from experiments I did as a kid with coin cleaning. It looks like a residue of some kind. I don’t know if a professional restorer could do something with it or not.

At rate it’s a nice coin that was minted at an interesting period. Many of the Seated Dollars have been worked on a some point. Many of the pieces that are original are darkly toned, which many collectors don’t like.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I agree with Bill. The hazy looking surfaces are a concern and often indicate that a coin has been cleaned and/or otherwise messed with.

Nice details on that coin... the fields look as if there has been an old dip of some sort that was not neutralized... Cheers, RickO

I have concerns about the fields. Seems an in hand review is really needed to make a reasonable evaluation of this one.

Looks like it could be a Proof, possibly mishandled.

Are there any definitive die distinctions to determine whether Proof or Business Strike?

Looks like a proof with those squared off rims and that strike.

Check for die character is of 1861 proofs. It looks like it may be an impaired proof. Very nice strike and wire rims.

That is what I was thinking since the business strike is rarer than the proof, can never trust in this hobby of kings
