Should regular size holders become smaller now that we have big holders?

In the old days TPGs just had one single-coin holder so the sizes of the holders were large enough to accommodate $50 slugs. Many of these holders are larger than some like the old ANACS white holder.

Now that TPGs have large coin/medal holders for the 5oz pucks, should the regular holder become smaller to accommodate just dollar sized coins and smaller?

I always liked the small ANACS slabs which at the time could hold any US coin with the exception of the $50 gold slugs. Space in a safe deposit box is limited and a smaller slab will take up less room.

I would be in favor of such a move.

It would be a headache for a while given the storage options we have grown accustomed to but it’s a good idea overall.

I don’t think so. The old ANACS holders were too small to hold the gold slugs. I guess ANACS declined grading them.

Smaller holders would take up less space in safe deposit boxes, but it would create the need for a whole new line of stage boxes. Currently I can store my best coins in PCGS boxes in the bank. That keeps the holders from scratching each other. Others go into the cellophane sleeves.

I can not see issuing the ANACS size holders again given their limitations. Any reduction in the size of the current holder, that could still house all of the “regular coins” would not gain you much more space. I really don’t see an advantage to it.

The holder/slab size or shape makes no difference to me. I have Anacs, PCGS, NGC... and maybe an oddball or two... I just focus on the coin. Cheers, RickO

It matters to me. Enough so that I'm considering selling off some of my smallest coins, just because all of that plastic and wasted SDB space bothers me every time I look at the coins. (These two not mine, but you get the idea.)

Since when do we have "big" holders? What holders? The new special (large) holders for one collector's grouping are a running joke. And how many millions and millions of currently-sized slabs do you want to "obsolete"? :s

They are not a joke among puck and medal collectors. They are necessary.

The big holders would only be necessary for 50 gold slugs which are a very small number of coins

Well, people love obsolete coins ;)

Also, so many coins have been moved to Gen 6 holders that moving doesn’t seem to be a big problem.

    Nice ones @MrEureka!

I collect George Soley pieces which are the size of a gold dollar, 13mm, because he used US Mint die stock. Here's one:

I absolutely a big fan of smaller holders . A better approach would make special holders for the $50 Gold.

I have a small suitcase that is mostly full of lower value TPG holdered coins. It's not worth the expense of storing it in a second SDB which I used to do. In a smaller holder, more would fit.
