Crusty new Bust for the Collection
Enjoying Spring and feeling good about life moving forward.
My youngest Son got married two weeks ago, and I was invited to dinner at their new place last night. My older two kids lost their Mom about a month ago, and while that has been difficult and trying for them, I was glad they came home for a week to take care of things. They stayed with me, I was able to help, and in a very unplanned coincidence (or act of God, depending on what you believe) they were able to attend the very small and private wedding of their younger brother.
So, the morning I was waiting to pick up my daughter from the airport, I was cruising through sites, browsing and tagging things and taking pencil notes, when I stopped and looked really hard at this one.
And a couple hours later, I made a call. And sent a check. And today I can say, I'm really glad I did.
This type of wholesome originality is so attractive to me. Couple that with late state die breaks and all of the character that a coin like this possesses, and I was grateful to have the opportunity to add her to my collection.
This is an O-101a, which has more extensive obverse dies cracks than the primary O-101. Possibly the most noticeable differences between the earlier and later states being the crack above the date which connects to the crack that encircles from the bust through the stars on the left and across the cap, and the short spur obverse crack from the milling to Star 1.
Feel free to guess the grade, provide any thoughts (good bad or indifferent) or share anything from else from 1810.

Great buy, it’s crusty old and beautiful
Gorgeous 1810 O.101a Todd!
I won’t guess the grade because I know it and saw it before. It caught my eye when I first saw it. If I didn’t already own this die marriage I would have snapped it up in a heartbeat.
Awesome originality!
Congrats on a great pickup!
Dave
Real nice coin!
Stunning.......... Like!
Love those die cracks.

Awesome coin! That's what 200+ year old coins should look like. I'm guessing 58.

Ok so I love the detail but have to net it to a nice 50 and tolerable 53
45 50
Nice crust on that bust.
Another nice one! I’ll go 53-55
Thank you for all the comments and guesses so far. I'll reveal the grade a little later today.
@tradedollarnut Out of curiously Bruce, what do you see that warrant using the word "net" within your comment?

That's a good one. Very good.
All coins are net graded for various attributes...for me the eye appeal was a slight negative
I’ve been hoping you would get to the early dates. Good choice as well.
@tradedollarnut Thanks Bruce. Understand completely. It threw me a bit of a curve at first.
Thank you all for the comments!
Not sure I captured the colors and surfaces fully. She is very lustrous, but has a thick skin. I have really struggled with my photo outputs recently. It's lighting issues I need to get corrected.
Anyway, the coin is graded AU55, and it has a bean. I find grade solid and correct in hand.
Here are the sellers pictures for comparison.

Seller’s pics capture the luster more effectively.
Very nice...I recently picked up a 102A as well--her slightly younger sister.
and her much older sister...the 102 Prime...much uglier, but no die cracks to be found.
Very nice 1810’s @OKbustchaser!
At first I did a double take when I saw the left wing on your bust halves as they looked to be incredibly well struck for a O.102 and O.102a, but then realized you meant O.101 and O.101a.
The early prime die state of the O.101 is definitely not easy to find without any die cracks whatsoever......great job in finding one!
Dave
I wish I could type.
A very nice original coin. I don't agree with the 55 grade, I would have said 50 by current standards and 45 by the standards of 40 years ago, but it is still a nice coin regardless.
Looks like there’s probably a truckload or luster in hand!
BHNC #248 … 130 and counting.
You have a 'crusty busty' indeed! Late to the game, but was going to guess 53-55 range.... nice original coin with interesting die cracks. Probably did not last much longer. Cheers, RickO
I got a good chuckle, and yet, that is an astute observation!
