US Mint Issue

I tried to order the 4 piece gold proof set over a month ago and like many of you my order was cancelled. I woke up this morning to find a $4400 charge on my card for the set. I called to cancel and apparently I have to fill out some forms to have it cancelled. Personally when I'm told something is cancelled, the transaction is over and I shouldn't have to worry about it later.

Has anything like this happened to any of you?

Hasn't the set gone up in value? I would think it would be a fortunate turn of events.

Canceling a sale should be standard procedure for a merchant. It’s really poor that the mint can’t do this correctly. It’s one more reason purchase many mint products in the secondary market.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I have not personally experienced a cancellation issue with the Mint.

Notwithstanding, I humbly suggest that you accommodate the Mint's paperwork request, and "fill out some forms to have it (officially) cancelled".

I agree that you should not have to do this. However, if you do not address the issue to their satisfaction, it could complicate future orders.

I completely agree. I'll do what I have to do as I do not want hurt my chances with future orders. I received a cancellation email shortly after my call so step one is done.

I think the sets do sell on the secondary market for more than issue, but it's simply not worth the hassle at this point.

I'm a currency guy so I don't deal with the mint very often. I appreciate all of your input.

Did they actually tell you they were canceling or send you an email that they might cancel?

The text of the email I got said they was a problem and they might cancel, but when I called they said it was just indicating a hold on the order while they checked inventory.

  • It was originally cancelled. I got the email and was frustrated that I didn't get it after it was confirmed. I called the mint the same day and the rep said the order was cancelled. The hold was lifted off my card a few days later.

It may be in the mints terms and conditions that they can do this, but it's incredibly shady in my opinion. At least send an email stating one is available and have the option to accept it. I'm not a fan of $4,400 ghost charges on my card.

That would be an unpleasant surprise.... Sure, it could be welcome in the long run, but an unexpected charge can also be an issue. I have not had that happen, and hope it does not occur. Cheers, RickO

I still think that's more a mis-statement by the CS rep rather than anything nefarious or any fine print in the terms and services.

As I mentioned, I got an email that an order was going to be canceled. I called. They said it was maybe going to be canceled depending on inventory. But it never was canceled. I then eventually called back, a week or so later, because the order was still showing. I was then given a slightly different story, that sometime after the 1st phone call they had tried to put the order through but there was a CC problem. I said, could you try it again right now. They did and it went through.

So, I would never put 100% faith in what the CS rep tells you. Some of them are very good and know the system. Other times....
