Looks like my ebay days are over.

jesbrokenjesbroken Posts: 9,318 ✭✭✭✭✭

Ebay sent me a message today that I only had 10 or so days left to join their management program or not be able to sell on ebay any longer. In truth I didn't really have a problem with it. So when I tried to sign up, it wouldn't allow me to use my P.O. Box address, which is all we have in Southern WV. To solve the UPS and FEDEX issues 911 gave us all fire addresses, which the USPS will not accept and neither will ebay. It says not an acceptable address. The funny thing is with over 2000 sales in 17 years my address has always been a P.O. Box. I give up. They tell me I can go and sign up in a neighboring town and get an address. I'm 73 and live in the house I was born in. Not much chance in that.

Others have had this problem, you could check to see if the solution one member found might work for you.

My son in ND has the same problem. No street address because his home is in two counties (on the line). Neither PO in either county will issue an address so he has a PO..

Using your local post office address and adding your mailbox is also used by those who want to avoid having others discover their resident address. This is commonly used and highly recommended among Law Enforcement employees.

the postal service advises that the following be used:
123 street address UNIT (pob #) instead of apartment

some companies have lists of addresses for mail box stores and PO's and will refuse those addresses if they do not deliver to "Boxes" this has happened to me on more than 1 occasion.

Unlike many, I have never had a major problem with ebay. I enjoy it's buying and selling opportunities and where else can you have the volume of buyers for your products or the sellers for your needs?

I saw the writing on the wall years ago. It sucks, because being able to freely buy and sell on eBay made it easy to flip in and out of coins as I was getting started in the hobby.

The exit strategy for getting rid of coins is much harder now.

I liked being able to buy cheap locally and sell to a national market. Don’t do it too much any more. Kinda hate to see a good thing change itself out of usefulness.

I have received the same ultimatum. I’m struggling with giving them full access to my bank account. Right now, I’m leaning toward saying good buy to my selling privileges.

I have noticed lately that a couple of my saved sellers now have zero items listed... I wonder if those folks are bailing out too...

I opened a separate bank account some years ago just to use with internet and any mail ordering. I never keep much in the account and made sure it does not pay overdraws.

Yes, that option is likely the only way I would proceed as a seller. I’m rather apathetic about the whole deal.

My last sale on eBay was in 2012. I quit selling on there that long ago.
I’ve only been buying on there since.

My latest was a currency purchase (exempt from sales tax in NC)
They charged tax, I paid I had no choice at checkout then called. It took several calls and eventually, about 3 weeks later they refunded the tax.

It’s taken most of my enthusiasm away from buying any numismatic items because of all the headache.

I’m not quitting them entirely, but VERY seldom do I want to purchase from eBay anymore.

    It’s a shame, really... :(

I can't imagine that forcing people to go to eBay managed payments is/was a good idea. There are many people who are going to let eBay selling go rather than hand over personal/banking info. Myself included

The irony is eBay owned PayPal once. It was only spun off because of activist investors.

I have bought and sold on ebay for about ten years and have switched over to the new payment method for receiving funds. The switch was very smooth. I've always had a PO box as my main address. I like the solution posted earlier by @braddick - I hope it works for you.

Many Post Offices offer “Street Addressing” for your P.O. Box. Here’s how it works.

    Your Name
Post Office Street Address Unit # (Your P.O. Box number)
    Your City and Zip code.

Inquire at your Post Office to see if they offer it.
Then fill out the form to accept mail addressed that way.
No cost for the service. Do NOT list your box as apartment #.
Take it from this retired letter carrier....works well for me.😉

It's not any riskier, it's the fact ebay wishes to control how you pay and when and they control all access. They actually did when the first started with paypal. It became the only acceptable way to pay. Then when ebay sold it, they lost control(key word).

use the post office address. they permit that either generally or with a signed document.
    ie:

    400 North A Street
    Box 793

if the box # at least isn't under the address it is about a 50/50 if it gets delivered to the box.

NO. That format will not work.
    It should read:

    Post Office Street Address
    Unit # (your box#)
Post Office City, State and Zip code.

without being argumentative, i've received MANY packages/letters like i typed it. i'm not saying every single PO across the country will accept it but for the OP, it is better than nothing to try. :)

The U.S. Mint is also VERY particular about address matching. They cancelled my order for a 2021 1/2 oz. proof gold since my U.S. Mint mailing address had the UNIT number but my credit card company had used apartment number format. That’s despite my telling them the correct format AND having them read it back to me.

    • With Post Office Street Addressing (which requires you to fill out a separate form when applying) you must follow their addressing rules.
If you are merely getting mail sent to you at your box a different format MIGHT work.

eBay wants control? That ship sailed 20 years ago and won't be coming back. At this point, it is what it is and one either accepts it and moves forward with the understanding that things aren't going to be like they used to, or not.

    .
that is where i am at with eBay currently. why in the world they want to control payments/fees but still have shipping labels, purchases etc go through paypal is just plain inconvenient. (i will hope this really puts a wrench into the scammer's engines.

auditing when/how buyers pay, refunds and a couple other things has become much more time consuming than just payal handling everything BUT either i get on board or move on down the road.

i've said it a thousand times so i will eat my own words, "change sings the tune that we all dance to." !

My last transaction with eBay went horribly wrong. The package was put into the wrong mailbox by the mailman. eBay and the seller claimed no fault as the package was delivered. One of my dishonest neighbors got my package and did not turn it in to the leasing office. I did not file a complaint with the post office because my mailman has always been good at bringing mail to my door, except this one time.
