Encased coins anyone?

BustDMsBustDMs Posts: 1,618 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have a couple unusual ones. One is still in its original box.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

First two for me as well... I have not previously seen encased Morgans. Cents, nickels, dimes and quarters... no halves either. Cheers, RickO

Very ironic. Sounds like Buick had big plans for the 1940s. :'(

URL says so, but the page definitely isn't encased coins related. Not sure this isn't a "1st post" phishing attempt. Got all kinds of security alerts trying to hit this page.

The U.S. Buick encased dollars come in two major varieties and are uncommon but far from rare. A bit more difficult to obtain are the three Canadian encased coins promoting the 1940 Buicks which include a Canadian1940 1c, a 1939 10c in a brass encasement and a 1939 commemorative dollar also encased in brass. I believe that all the dimes & dollars I've seen have been 1939 dated (the 1940 issues may not have been available when the encasements were struck).

I have seen a couple of the Buick encased Canada dollars, but never bought one. Both were 1939 coins.

    PS:
Of your three Canadian Buick encasements, one is Pontiac ;)

    Bruce,
Did anyone save the topical lists from the old Encased Collectors Of America (?) site? I thought I had the Chevy "S.A." list copied somewhere but now I can't find it. Was any of that good info salvaged or did the owner just shut it down cold?

I've been intrigued by a few encased coins myself as of late.

Lincoln cent are all too common and Indian Head cents tend towards the upper range of my budget right now, so I've been accumulating other denominations of encased coins.

Can't you just start a thread spamming your site and not resurrect a bunch of dead threads to make the same point over and over. When you turn the 1st page into a bunch of Zombie threads, you're just annoying us.

This item has an address but no city, but a little research found that it was from Louisville Kentucky.

    image
Egyptian Tea Room, Louisville, Encased Cent 1931 Lucky Penny
    Specs: Aluminum, 35mm, 6.05gm

Obverse: Horseshoe / KEEP ME AND NEVER GO BROKE
Reverse: EGYPTIAN TEA ROOM / 617 SOUTH 4TH / WHERE YOUR FUTURE IS REVEALED
    Encased: Lincoln Cent 1931 (Philadelphia)

The Egyptian Tea Room was a famous nightclub in Louisville Kentucky which operated from 1931 to 1940.
It was located at 617 South 4th Street.
During Prohibition it was run as a "speakeasy" where alcohol was served.
The club offered fortune telling and tea leaf readings.

Okay, I was going to wait until it arrived before posting this one, but I am like a kid at Christmas over it.

We've all seen examples of coins encased within a "token", but when is the last time you've seen a "token" encased within a coin?

Production notes by its maker: Struck inside of a holed 1964 Kennedy Silver Half Dollar. Inside token is pewter.

Struck at the 2004 Georgia 40th Anniversary convention on the minimint.

I thought I would resurrect this old thread with something I haven't shown in quite a while. It is a mash up of two separate topics actually - Encased Coins & Masonic Pennies . . . . .

This "encased cent" really delivers it's worth. Weighing in at over 10oz, this 63mm diameter x 10mm thick example is the largest encased coin that I own.
