Do not adjust your television monitor....you are seeing double....

Yes, yes this is exactly what it looks like....a RAW 1955 DDO found in the wild as it were. I was evaluating a collection for a client, him wanting to know if there was anything good amongst the pennies, nickles, dimes, and dollars...

I, of course, had to do a double take, and immediately figured it couldn't be as marked. But there is nothing that makes me believe that it isn't genuine. I have my opinion about the grade, I'd love to hear yours and what you think about it. I'll be sending it off to our hosts for my client shortly. I'll post a result in a few months, but in the meantime, levy your conclusions, good forum, and let's see what happens!

Looks OK to me but of course authentication is a must. Appears to be brown Unc but that dig in the obv field limits it to a 63 or so.

As photographed (tough through Mylar) I’d say it’s AU and cleaned.

    I concur with Wow!

I also think the color looks off. AU55 to 58 ... or AU Questionable Color

PIcking up a bit of a gloss on the reverse lettering. Could be nothing, could be an old cleaning. These come with color, so I'm less concerned about that. If it gets a straight grade, I'd say AU55 or MS61BN. It's a little to crunchy for AU58.

Wow!!!! That is just crazy that these can still be found out there like this. You never know what some people have in their homes!!

“If it were genuine (and thus worth slabbing), it would already be in a major TPG holder”. Im glad no one posted that.😉

The coin looks AU58 to me and I’m not seeing cleaning that would preclude a straight grade.

If it were genuine it would already be in.....oh hey wait a minute. (I'm kidding Mark)

That is seriously cool to find and I hope it straight grades. How nice to find something of interest among the many worthless Wheat cents.

The coin looks AU58 to me and I’m not seeing cleaning that would preclude a straight grade.

ENTIRE collection was raw. Not a single slab to be found. Most of 1930 and up are all RED, some look gem or better. That was tucked in its slot in the 1950s area and stood out like a sore thumb b/c everything else was red in that section of the binder.

Rest of collection, mostly morgans, again, some strong coins that "should already be in a TPG holder" are all nice and raw...

The collection was pretty nice to look at and evaluate. The 1955 is the only coin I now don't own right out. Will wait on PCGS's thoughts. While I'll hope for a very low MS, I'm in the AU58 crowd....

Sounds like a nice group of coins - best of luck. For better or for worse, there's not a particularly large value spread between AU58 and (even) MS62 for the 1955 DDO.

in standing what an AU 58 is...this is not.....to many hits.
if not for the small bit of wear... a AU 58 would be a gem (65) coin...this is not.

Amazing find! I was expecting you'd find a huge stash of beat up 1961-D pennies or something like that.

I'm going with 55, maybe 58 on a good day. I finally got one of these for my collection a few years ago. Even non-collectors think this error is cool.
