The Other, Other, 1938 Jefferson Nickel

I have been wanting one of these forever but always way to pricey. Then an opportunity presented itself and decided
to go for it. Thanks to @Zoins and all his research he does link here i now have a 1938 Jefferson Nickel competition entry by Wilhelm (William) and Franz (Frank) Hejda example to go along with the other 1938 Nickel design.
.
If you have any of the designs post them here it would be great to see them.
.
.
I must say there is a haze on it but not sure what can be done to help this. If anyone knows please do tell.

Thank goodness the cartoon versions didn't get struck. I like the original, far more dignified version that we call the Jefferson Nickel. Everyone has their opinions and as long as you like them, cool.

I have a couple of these I picked up 23 years ago in London. Coincraft was the seller. They would not ship to the US out of concerns over the legality.
They are sterling silver, which accounts for the color.
Coincraft had the original plasters hanging on the wall in 1997. When I was in the shop a few years ago the plasters were gone.
That’s is so cool @JBK what a fantastic story! Post them here if you can.

Will do, once I can find them.
That's funny. I just came across this 1938p while CRH. Lol

They also made a few hundred out of nickel. I wish I bought some at the time.
I have to say that the "losing" design seems to have won the reverse!
Does anyone have the weight specs on these? Mine feels awfully light and if mine
Is silver I don’t see why it would have the spelled skin it does in the fields

Very fascinating example! Thanks for sharing.
I find it interesting that the view of Monticello on the reverse of the losing piece (less the "grounds" and some other embellishment) is the view used for the final design, while Jefferson's Bust from Felix Schlag's design is precisely the obverse.
“We are only their care-takers,” he posed, “if we take good care of them, then centuries from now they may still be here … ”

I also like the Jefferson portrait as used, but the reverse Monticello on the losing design. Cheers, RickO
First off, does anyone slab these things?
I went looking for mine today and they were exactly where I thought they might be.
Here are my twins. My pictures don't show it very well, but mine also have the smooth area on Jefferson's jowl. I don't think it is rub - I think it is a break in the frost.
Thanks @JBK they all look great! Do any of yours have the crackly orange peel texture/haze?
I’m trying to figure out why mine is like that as silver does not do this

Mine look a little better in the photos than in hand (slight toning here or there not accurately displayed). I don't see any orange peel or widespread haze on them, though.
Could yours have PVC? It otherwise looks like silver to me (sterling, remember, .925).
Here’s another pic, more light and in edited.

I thought it might be PVC, maybe an acetone dip would help?

I have never used acetone (I need to learn) but it might help.
I also recall a thread a few years ago that discussed this sort of effect on proof coins. Almost like a growth. I have a clad half somewhere that has a sort of cross-hatch pattern in the fields.
That's pretty cool Steph. I have a set of FCNC's also. I'll have to keep a look out for the one you've posted!

It would have been great to have the Art Deco font from the winning design used. I don't care for the winning reverse, though. That view and the non-specific tree makes me think Yakko, Wakko, and Dot live there.

I like the art deco lettering too.

I was lucky and found another out of England. It was a long wait but, worth it.
I tried showing the proof fields on this image.

I submitted this to PCGS back in Nov/Dec. Hopefully soon get it back.

I have had luck with MS70 removing the haze, but you need to be very careful that you dont create hairlines applying it. An acetone rinse would not hurt either.
That cartoon head belongs in the Disney version of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Very cool!
