excitement happiness and regret
every time I buy something nice at auction, I experience the same familiar spectrum of feelings... first, always, I envision a big red arrow over my head flashing "biggest idiot in the world," simultaneously, I feel excitement about picking it up or getting it mailed to me, and also simultaneously, regret for, I don't know, not retiring earlier or not buying my wife another horse or something
then I tell myself to keep my big mouth shut or it's going to cost me another horse

How many horses do you have left?
unfortunately there is no limit to the number of horses my wife would buy if the opportunity presented itself
I have known many a men whos wives own horses and I dont envy them. My coins are shipped to my shop and smuggled through my backpack and into the safe. No horses here. My luck might run out if ever caught
LOL on horses. I have an ex-wife that became an ex-wife when she became her horse's wife. We would probably still be married if I hadn't bought the farm!
I try to be discrete but this is another level.

I always try to balance something with a sale.
No shame, she spends too much on cloths I throw away or gift by the trash bag.
Could be worse, much worse, but it has been a happy 20 years.

Spectrum of feelings....I like that statement.
It’s wise to take the time to evaluate oneself and behavior around the hobby from time to time.
For me, I always balance out my purchases by occasionally picking up some nice estate jewelry on auction for the wife. I have even, over time, figured out the required ratio of coins to jewelry purchases in order to avoid any trouble haha--it is 3:1.
I only buy stuff at auction that is a sane purchase at my price. Many who buy at auction paying more than anyone else in country the end user. Did you get in a bid war with some collector?
My observation is that you often pay more in the big auctions that you would anywhere else. Just recently a British five pound gold coin sold for over $14,000 at auction. I bought the same issue of coin, in the same grade a few months ago, that I like better, going by the auction house pictures, for $10,000 from an on-line dealer. Something has to be really hard to find to get me involved with auctions.
That's why I wish I could establish more relationships with reliable dealers on-line. Covet has killed the shows for me, I am hoping that I will be able to go to Summer FUN.
I continue to enjoy virtually every coin I own, but I do regret the fact that I will never get my money out of a lot of them.
me and my wife tell each other if we have packages arriving in the mail and we open the packages in front of each other and all is good
and my wife knows that i'm a coin collector/dealer and buying coins is just part of what i do she doesn't mind and she knows i buy coins at select times so there is no issue

I have the same gamut of emotions but then I ask myself “ Do you want to sell what you just purchased and get the money back instead?” And the answer is always a resounding ‘no’. I enjoy it, too much, and it would be too difficult to replace, if possible at all.

I buy things, my wife buys things....Not a competition or tit for tat.... All is well. Years ago, I was in a horse/wife situation... She bought them, I took care of them....I liked the horses, relationship did not last.
Cheers, RickO
You are better off buying coins from Rick’s TV show than fooling around with horses. I guess you could always ride the horse to the poorhouse.
good plan, you gotta have a plan
thanks for sharing your wisdom especially the ratio
On rare occasion, I will bid on a DLRC auction. I do not bid on anything that I would consider expensive or overpriced. My wife shows little interest if I tell her that I bought another coin. Most of the time, I usually don’t even bother to tell her when I buy a coin or bullion.
I keep my discretionary budget for coins and bullion in my own separate bank accounts. My wife, using her own discretionary funds, buys whatever she wants.
We buy what we want, with no regrets.
that sounds sweet
You can buy many nice coins instead of horses. Horses have expensive upkeep.
i used to own 4 horses trust me i know how price of having to upkeep them
also my wife tells me what she bought or will buy and i'll do the same just something we agreed on when we got married that we would tell each other what we bought or want to buy that way nothing is hidden from the other

Unlike my beautiful spouse, who seems intent on clothing the entire homeless population with six 6 cloths every year or two, I always justify that I can at least get 50 to 100 cents on the dollar in return upon sale.
Basically recycling.
Makes me seem smarter than I am...
