NEWP! My first $3 Princess...

From a great forum member (Thanks @SurfinxHI )
I have always wanted one but just couldn't find one that was reasonable and not all hacked up. Hard to believe that after fifty-odd years of collecting I have never had one...

Congratulations. I got my first (and only) one a couple of years ago. It feels good doesn't it? I too have been collecting for over 50 years.

I got one about 2 years ago from Gerry Fortin after over 60 years of collecting. My first and only also. Mine is an 1855.
My first one was an 1878: which one of the “common dates.” It was the last coin I needed to complete the 12 piece gold type set. It graded VF, but I didn’t realize when I traded for it that it had been mounted on the edge in one small spot. I traded a run of the mill BU set of Franklin haves for it.
At least it was genuine. This was in the late 1960s, and counterfeits were a big problem in the $3 gold series. One dealer told me a story about how he won a counterfeit one in a poker game he was playing with other dealers.
I know how trilling it is to get that coin, especially if it completes the type set.
I have been collecting over 50 years and still do not have one....and likely will not. I like the big gold coins...though my favorite is the $5 Indian.... I do have a small Mexican gold coin I purchased from a fellow at work years ago, he needed some cash. Cheers, RickO
The Three Dollar Gold Piece is not that small. The planchets are wider and thinner than the dime sized $2.50. Here are some diameters:
Three Dollar Gold 20.5 mm
Five Dollar Indian 21.6 mm
Five Cent Nickel 21.2 mm
The nickel looks a little larger in this photo because it is slightly nearer to the camera.
Here is the $3 gold covering the nickel.
@BillJones .... Thanks for the pictures...puts it in perspective. I recall seeing a couple at coin shows in the PNW, but that was over twelve years ago and they were slabbed. Cheers, RickO
There were a bunch of these in the Stacks auction. I looked through them all at lot viewing. I didn’t care for 80% of them but there were some very nice ones too. I’d guess a type collector would be wise to dig through 10-20 or so to find a really nice one. The problem is locating that many to look through. It would be a worthy quest at an ANA or FUN show........ remember those?
I love them. I got mine just over two years ago. I got lucky finding a slightly better date and in great condition for my budget at least

Nice pick up, a little Meguiar's PlastX from your local auto store will remove those scratches on your slab in a hot minute. You're not alone, I have never owned one either and I own a bunch of classic gold. I purchase a lot of raw gold and am especially leery of the $3 pieces so I have passed on several at different times.

Wow, I see the $3 price tag on the bag, you did good!!!

I am very outclassed here! This is the only $3 Princess I own. I need to get it reholdered. Feel free to GTG.
Sweet, $3 gold is cool 😎
XF-40?

Why do you need to get it reholdered?
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
That's an awful nice AU-58... Hard to tell by the picture - Under-graded?
@Lazybones right on the money--WOW!
@PerryHall the holder is just pretty scratched and scuffed up. Rather have it in a Gold Shield since its my only $3 example.
I think it looks spectacular! I'd rather have an honest XF-40 than a details AU

Thanks!
It's a true 58, there's wear on the high points, but very UNC looking in hand, flashy semi-prooflike fields. Under 5K mintage, likely all minted from the same dies...
