Reverse Proofs

Can anyone post a reverse proof that is more attractive and shows off the design elements better than a standard proof?

(I think they are often quite a novelty, but are a bit on the gimmicky side)

@MsMorrisine asked: “ how is this one?”

    Perfect! That is quite amazing.

Thanks, it does seem that the reverse proof works best when the field is wide open, as in the Mexican gold or American Innovation dollar.

I agree with @JBK that with some of the recent heavily frosted regular proofs, the devices are obscured. This is the concern I have with many of the reverse proofs, though some great counter-examples are posted above.

As much as I admire Gilroy Roberts' portrait of JFK, I don't think either heavy frosting or the reverse proof brings out the design to its best effect. It's hard to beat a 1964 CAM for this coin!

Very nice. Can we see what is behind door #2, i.e. the reverse side? :)

The Mexican gold is a perfect use of the reverse cameo (I hate the nonsensical term "reverse proof") finish. Bold central device, background subdued by the matte finish. It isolates the main subject without having it floating in space. Similar to using a large aperture to get shallow depth of field in a photo to achieve the same effect. The 60-grit matte finish the mint applies is perfect for blurring backgrounds. Too bad they use it to blur the subject instead.

  • I didn't like it, but this was cheap at my LCS and had to grab it. NGC PR69 Silver reverse proof. I think these pics are alright.

Reverse Proofs are interesting if not rare. They are collectibles in the same way that Burnished Finish or Enhanced Proofs are and PCGS obviously gives them their own classification. I wonder if there is are PCGS Registry Sets for Reverse Proofs ?

I think a big part of the problem is that the reverse proofs don’t photograph as nice as regular proofs. The black mirrors get too many light reflections because they are on the devices rather than the flat fields 🤔

Not sure if there’s a registry but I’m only missing the 2011 ase RP. 2006 to date including the 2021. 😉 Got them. The 2006 took awhile to find quality with the right price but last fall during the Morgan’s shipping time I found one. 👍🏼

Not the best picture but the silver are very nice. The gold is just magnificent. I’ve seen some quality pictures of the silver and they are awesome. Not cheap, just very expensive and I’m not sure why. I’ve got some beautiful RP from Australia and Canada Heck Britannia’s🙀. Just as nice

I only have a few toned reverse proofs. However I love the Mexican gold the best so far followed by the new dollar.
