Sometimes an Everyman Collection can be Tough

gschwernkgschwernk Posts: 338 ✭✭✭✭✭

Last year I noticed nobody was trying to collect $3 gold in the everyman category. So I decided to give it a shot. It is
much more difficult locating these coins in circulated rather than mint state. I think it is probably due to the fact that production totals were low and many collectors saved these coins so there is a high proportion of mint state coins.

    How far along are you?

Three dollar gold coins are a tough series to begin with... Best of luck in your search. Cheers, RickO

Well, you have 33 more than I do.

The thing I keep trying to tell myself is to (to use your example) focus on the 33 and not the 7. I haven’t got there yet but I wish you luck and safe travels

Just like with gold dollars towards the end they just weren’t popular and were probably just collector pieces, jewelry bits, and some made to keep them from being instant rarities. I haven’t gotten one yet but it’s on my list to complete my 12 piece type set.

Good luck with your finding the right pieces!

The 54 Dahlonega is a killer. Good thing the set doesn't require the 70-S!

It took me a long time to get my everyman's collection of Buffalo Nickel's. The AU58's of many series of coins can be as difficult to find as MS coins. Good luck.

I almost purchased the 54D but I could not negotiate a price that I was willing to pay at the time. This is not an important set for me. I will probably retire this set before I complete. I need to start conserving funds for some higher priced coins I need in other sets.

A 1929-S 58+ sold for $460 at Great Collections on Sunday. I was bidding on this coin for my everyman type set. I was no where near the final bid.

I wonder if everyman sets have gotten more difficult due to AU60+ market grading?

An 1854-D Three Dollar Gold is not an “every man” coin; it is a “big boy” coin. I have one, but it would not qualify since it’s in an AU-55 holder. The population report on that coin is deceptive. The AU totals have been swelled by the multiple re-submissions by those who were looking for upgrades to Mint State. One dealer told me he tried the same coin six times.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Au58 is the cap not the requirement. An au55 54d would be worth a lot of points

Series collecting has its drawbacks. When collecting each and every coin within a series you are going to have some tough dates to fill. That is another reason I am a Type Collector. I can be choosy about the date/mm for the type and move on. There is a certain satisfaction on filling every hole, but I would rather have a variety of coins instead of the same design over and over again, with only the date/mm changing. If we were all the same that would be boring. Continued success in your hunt.

I remember buying a 1920 Buffalo with ever so slight of a rim clip in AU58. It was a gorgeous coin. but then PCGS wouldn't allow it in the everyman's set because it was an error coin. I couldn't beleive it. Such as it is.
