Nice piece of equipment. Seems there are all sorts of devices to help one take better pictures. I will stick with my hand held phone and computer table, with a Bounty paper towel for background. Too many other fun things to do with disposable cash - i.e. wine, firearms, knives, marbles, food.... ;) Cheers, RickO

It’s very nice looking, not sure if it’s better than just setting the iPhone on top of a wide mouth plastic bottle like I use though. Either one will keep the phone level and you use the built in timer to take the picture so it doesn’t shake the phone when you take the picture. The one pictured is probably useful to get the height perfect for different size coins or for trying to take a picture at a slight angle to try and capture toning colors better or for when you have a coin in a slab that is not level inside the slab maybe.

Which iPhone do you have, 10, 11, 12?

I’m curious of how good the pics you’ll be able to take with it.

Please post images after you get it set up.

I never though about using the timer. I don't know if all phone cameras have this feature, but mine will take a picture by using certain words such as “Cheese“, “Smile“, “Capture“, “Shoot” or “Record video“.

nj taking it up a notch. i've been beating people over the head about these camera phones and just how possible it is to take wonderful images with them. nice to see affordable copy stands to accommodate the phones. VERY possible to take something like this to shows. i used to drag a big copy stand, my d90, lens, lights etc.

your images have lots of room for creativity/improvement. i say that not to discourage but encourage that the ceiling is pretty high with your setup.

set those lights free and move them around a bunch. now we need to find trigger remotes for the phones. i used to hold a remote and light in one hand and a light in the other. move them around enough and you will find the just-right angles.

    tx for sharing. :)

That's cool to see full dedicated phone set up like that!
For those who already have a stand which screws into your regular camera's tripod mount you can actually mount your phone if you buy one of these $3 phone tripod holders too  ...Giving away a top secret pro-tip lol!

You can face the phone in either direction and move it back and forth so it doesn't interfere with the touch screen.
Stuck an old phone in there to show...

I don't take great pictures. I've never really worked on it. But I have discovered that if you move the phone further away from the coin and then zoom in, the phone camera is able to focus better, thus better pics.

I had always wondered why using the 2X feature on my iPhone and moving it back made for better pictures of close objects.

    Thanks for an explanation.

So...when you zoom on your phone it's actually a digital zoom, which is EXACTLY the same as cropping your photo. Just an FYI. Zooming in might be helping you by making the center-weighted focus happen much more easily for you though!
The best things you can do to get excellent phone photos...

    • Touch on the screen exactly where you want it to focus, to nail the focus.
    • Stabilize! Whether it's bracing your hands and arms or having the phone sitting on or against something.

Stabilizing is the number one cause of lack of sharpness...it's easy to test...take a snapshot of anything just holding your phone. Then take the same snapshot while holding the phone against your body or having it against something. Zoom in to both photos and you will see that even the slightest camera shake makes a noticeable difference in sharpness.

Another trick is to simply take more than one photo, take a few while you feel stabilized...us old school photographers would claim that we were able to shoot photos in between heart beats  ...So take a few, look through zooming in on each one and cherry pick the sharpest appearing one. Who here doesn't love cherry picking?!

@ricko is absolutely on the mark there with using something soft to minimize shake!!! I have no opinions on which is the quicker picker upper or if the packages with lumberjacks are better to reduce camera shake...

pretty sure most cent camera phones have a time delay and can possibly automatically shoot multiple images back to back.

really the best thing of all is to post images from time to time to get outside input. some of us here have way over 100k images semi to professionally shot. i don't even come close to some here in qty nor qlty.

this thread is going down the right road though and i for one look forward to future images.

    Camera ZOOM FX

This is the obligatory camera app that can take a picture simply because you tell it to. You can order the camera around by saying specific keywords and it will take the picture. This leaves your hands to hold the phone securely without the fear of dropping it when you try to hit that shutter button.

With the large screens of smartphones and their almost 6-inch sizes, it has become harder to hit the shutter button with your thumb, especially while taking selfies. Thankfully, many default camera apps on Android phones come with these features but this one stands out more because it offers so much more than the default apps. Right from the interface to the voice commands, everything is polished in this great camera app for Android.

that is a great option! is that android or iOS?

for those less tech savvy, you can get the finger rings/plungers that stick to the back of the phone to make the phone overall significantly easier to handle.

Android. But with most Samsung(mine an S20+) you can take photos with voice control, but with this software you can zoom and set white balance and many other controls without touching the phone causing vibrations. Just learning about this tonite, so not all familiar yet and do not mean to say this is checked out by me, just read about it and downloaded the free version, which appears to not be very useful.
