An exceptionally original 1941 Proof Liberty Walking Half — new pickup

P0CKETCHANGEP0CKETCHANGE Posts: 3,028 ✭✭✭✭✭

All, I am so enthused with this purchase that I could not bear to bury it in the "new purchases" thread. This was not a coin that I have been looking for, at all — but when I saw the dynamic iridescent halos of color on the reverse , it hit "WOW coin" territoryl. I've always admired these 20th Century proofs. Many of them are dipped BRILLIANT white and are beautiful, but this one had an originality and character that I simply could not pass up. I'll send it for a reholder and TrueView in the near future. Without further ado, I present:

Kudos to PCGS to give a coin like that the grade it deserves and not requiring a dip.

Megathreads are dumb, in my opinion. They kill activity on a forum.

Beautiful coin, keep posting outside of the newp's thread.

I agree with TomB, I was coming in not expecting to be impressed. to have escaped a bath and still to be that attractive. Special

That's a beauty for sure. I've always wanted a proof Walker myself. I'd take that one in a heartbeat.

I love to see them in this state of preservation. Very Nice. I am going to buy a proof Walker, for myself, sometime real soon. Thanks for sharing.

I'm surprised you don't have one already, given your moniker and profile photo! Good luck on your search for a nice example.

Very nice half dollar. Polished dies - no designer's initials and no feather by the eagle's left leg.

It's so hard to find fully detailed Walkers. The most fully detailed Walkers we have are unfortunately the 2016 gold centennial coins.

Rare to find like that these days.

Like several other posters, I came in thinking, okay, another Proof Walker, cool. I really think they are a great coin although I don't own one.

Then my mouth dropped a little. WOW!

That is an absolutely stunning example of condition and originality!! <3<3

Very attractive coin. I suspect it looks better in hand.

I have a 1941 proof walker that has multi colored toning. Also very attractive.

I like that look in proof Walkers, and am about to finish my set-missing only the '42-with a nice looking gem such as yours. Proof Walkers are a bargain all the way through PR67 imo. Truly superb 68's have went for gaga money of late, and too many 68's have abrasions which leaves me choosing nice, original 66 or 67 graded pieces.

After seeing coins shown in this thread and the Franklin DCAM thread it got me to wondering why no CAM or DCAM Walkers?

Anyone know why we don't see any examples of CAM/DCAM Walkers like in all the other series? Are they all in hiding?

PCGS has awarded the CAM designation to only eight Walkers, four of which are 1942. None have been designated DCAM.

Thanks. It would be an amazing coin in CAM or DCAM. Too bad they couldn't produce quality but flipped the switch with the Franklins.

I realize that this post might be very unpopular, a minority view and cause some to think I’m not-picking and/or going out of my way to be negative. Believe it or not, however, that’s not my intent.

The images of the coin make it appear original and attractive. Still, it’s not a look that causes me to think “wow” or anything similar. So I’m surprised by some of the reactions from highly knowledgeable posters in this thread

I see a lot of original Proof Walkers with varying degrees of patina. Some are unattractive, others range from OK looking to quite pretty and still others, gorgeous to stunning. To my eyes, the one posted here doesn't fall into the third category, each of which I understand, is quite subjective and ambiguous.

    Let the flames begin.😬

The sun is the stopper with CAM/DCAM walkers. It just doesn't come frosted much. When it is, it's a sight to behold. Probably one of the first 10 strikes off the die, if not less, and even then, only for certain years.

A buddy of mine has a 68 star walker that just makes me drool. Completely CAM except for the sun which has very little CAM effect at all. Tough, tough coins in CAM.

Thanks for the explanation. Just a shame when you see Franklins (the next half dollar series) with remarkable DCAM's.

Early Franklins are tough in CAM. The first good year for CAM franklins was '54. Then it went to crap again in '55. Then 56-63 they were pretty on point.

It is a shame that all the old masters who had made the gorgeous CAM/DCAM proofs in the Barber Era couldn't guide the mint in the production process, or didn't care to. The mint employees basically had to relearn how to do CAM/DCAM proofs from my understanding.

I think the more important thing for Walkers than CAM is actually having as full details as possible. Overzealous polishing of the dies also didn't help either case...

I am sure it's a nice coin in hand, based on the grade and CAC, but my reaction wasn't wow from the images. I am not a fan of the "original" hazy patina.
