From U.S. related coinage, an Oak Tree Shilling, dated "1652" but minted sometime between 1660 and 1667.
My oldest coin period is a Roman Republic quadrigatus minted between 225 and 215 BC.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Dawn of coinage electrum "trite" of Alyattes of Lydia
610-546 BC
The first proto-coins are thought to be nuggets of raw electrum (natural alloy of gold and silver) found in the Pactolus river around the city of Sardis in what is now Turkey. Exchanged for goods and services, they began to be standardized into similar weights and fractions of those weights, then with identifying imagery; first with simple striations, then this apparent royal seal of a roaring lion with the sun above his head.
Pure gold and pure silver coinage would soon follow under Alyattes' son or grandson Croesus.
This piece is arguably the first coin: Under Alyattes, stamped with his seal, standardized weight. After the exchange of raw nuggets but prior to refining.

Paid $50 bucks for it long ago, knew nothing about the series, basically bought on impulse. I'm confident it would straight grade. Fine15?? Very fine 20??

I've got some bc roman coinage stowed away somewhere in deep freeze, and am much more of an ultra-modern collector, so have @erwindoc to thank for this, currently my oldest us coin 🙏

These coins hailing from Ionia and circa 600 BC are among the oldest possible coins and the Seattle dealer who sold me my gold coin from Ionia represented to me that it was the first gold coin. Thanks Weiss for the confirmation.
