Grade Posted: NEWP 1919-D Walker to fill that hole in the early date set... GTG

With the early date set (1916 - 1929), for now I've been going after a date only set, as opposed to the full date/mm set for my late date Walkers (1933 - 1947). Any of the 1919 issues are tough (in my opinion) in pleasant grades, especially with nice original surfaces. Although never thought to be "fully" struck, most examples lack complete hand and head detail. This one at least does not have a "completely" flat head. It does have a CAC sticker, and some crust to go along with it! With that in mind, GTG if you'd like. Thanks for looking and appreciate your comments.

I grade it wow... exceptional for the date. I think the low is AU50. I would grade it AU50 and I would not be surprised if NGC graded it a 53. 40 is insulting and a 45 would be if the grader was having a bad day

I am glad I read this before I posted my first impression, as I would not want to insult anyone. ;)

Honestly, my first impression was XF40, but most of the Walkers I have graded are coins from the 1940s, so I may not be taking the strike quality properly into account.

Regardless of my ill informed opinion, it's a great coin, and congrats on adding to your set.

Walkers from 1916 through 1923 have a lower relief and the skirt lines are not well defined. Look at the bold bust line... there is virtually no signs of flatness on the arm extending across the flag and the lustre is exactly what one would want in a 1919-D. The reverse looks great with well defined wings and lustre. This is a very tough coin with this look and in this grade. It is a keeper unless you have $15-$25K to spend for a mid range MS example.

I'll guess 45. I'm not that good grading the early Walkers.

What a great and wholesome example! That's a rare bird for any 19 Walker, much less a 19-D, most probably the toughest of the three.

If the Obverse carries the grade, it could be a 50. The reverse seems more 40/45ish.

If the set you are doing is a natural EF/AU for the early dates, it's a GEM!

Count me in the 45 club

Very nice coin, and very pricey in UNC grades.

I am saying 40 because I don't know how to grade these - could be anywhere from upper VF to lower AU for all I know, but I do know this is a great coin and a good eye by the OP!

I love it - super nice coin, especially for that issue. My guess is XF45.
I just saw mine at the bank SDB this week, and I have to admit I like yours better.

I'll add it's heartening to see all the positive comments on an early upper circ walker.
Glad to see it's appreciated by the forum.

I’m just starting to get into Walkers...based on my 1916 in an ANACS VF30 holder, my first thought was 45. Hoping for a full AU grade for you. Really like that coin!

Good pictures... Likely an AU50 based on the images. The WLH is one of my favorite U.S. coin designs.... and, I remember fondly when they were pocket change... (Though rarely, since 50 cents was a lot of money when I was a kid). Cheers, RickO

Tough date. A well-known collector stated in CDN years ago that he'd only seen one piece he'd consider fully stuck for the date. This one is pretty good. I'd say XF45.

Just for fun. dig through the coins that have auctioned in 45 and 50 over past 10-15 years to see how this one Stacks up- no pun intended

Oh yeah, I went through that exercise before I bought this one, at least in the 45 grade. Wasn't very impressed with the comps. Definitely satisfied with this example.

Very true. I had a whizzed AU with a full hand and thumb and nearly full head that I sold to a dealer specialist for $1000 nearly 20 years ago. Whizzed or not he had a client that needed it.
Ironically I spent more than that for my weakly struck pcgs 45 from David Lawrence a few years back. But it has nice luster and attractive toning.

I’ll reiterate how much I like the op’s coin!

    Super nice 19-D.
I am late to the GTG but I would have said 45 as well.

  • pcgscacgoldpcgscacgold Posts: 2,504 ✭✭✭✭✭

Darn, I am late but was in the 40-45 range so I guess I have not lost it. That was a set I was aggressively building for a while. Then gold coinage came along and grabbed my attention.
