Grade on 90-s Morgan

logger7logger7 Posts: 7,762 ✭✭✭✭✭

A friend thought this coin may have been underpriced, for some reason he thought it might be gem, I see it as a really nice MS63. Anyone else?

Lots of obv surface and cheek chatter, and face , I can see it in 62 holder.

62-63 seem about right. I would go with 63 from the pictures.

The grade assigned will mainly be determined by the contact marks on the obverse. Especially the one below the chin and by the second star. I would guess it would end up getting a 62 or 63.

    I don't see it as anything but a 63.

I believe you’re overstating the significance of the marks beneath the chin and by the second star. And that they wouldn't preclude (even) a grade of MS65. Far more important are the face and neck areas.

I hate to jump in on this one.
You can make most Morgans look 62-66 if you are careful with the pics.
My first thought was 64 though.

Yes, you are correct, the current grading standards would not prevent a grade that high because of contact marks alone. Minus the marks, I would still think no better than 63, because of the overall chatter. I’m not a fan of reeding marks that are hiding in plain sight, so my guess reflected that😉

63, but the reverse looks pretty good.

that is a 63 just sold, the OP's ex here looks like more chatter/marks on cheek and fields , so I ventured with 62.

But in hand , we all know how this can play out.

I would agree 63 but it would not surprise me to see that in a 64 holder, I have seen many worse in 64 holders.

Looks a bit scuffy, I would say 63, not a gem.

63 also, with this much face and neck chatter, not likely a 64.

    Solid MS64.

I heard from Peter on the coin on arrival, who used to be a member here and is fighting cancer.

    His comment on it:

"The 1890 S Morgan has been cleaned, almost no original luster, going to return it.
Reverse is nice but obverse has "Pot Holes" in the cheek. Yuck!"
