W quarters

Been out of the coin game for a couple of years, but getting back into it. Can someone explain these W quarters? Are there proof AND MS? Can you get them from the mint directly? Is this only a one year thing or am I gonna have keep track of a whole new set of quarters?

Thanks!!

W quarters are UNC only and have a mintage of 2 million per reverse adding to 10 million W's per year. They have been minted in 2019 and 2020 only. You can not get them directly from the mint as they are only found mixed into circulation quarters.

@scooter25... Welcome back to the game.... The W quarters do have a following and people are building sets. My set consists of a W coin of each denomination (Including the '95W ASE). Cheers, RickO

There are a total of 10 W quarters.

In 2019 the Mint produced Lowell, American Memorial, Guam, San Antonio and River of No Return.

In 2020 they produced American Samoa, Weir Farm, Salt River, Marsh-Billings and Tallgrass.

The Mint has confirmed that they will not be producing any 2021 W quarters. No word yet about 2022 and beyond.

If you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

    Enjoy the hunt!😎

Guess I’m gonna have to start getting some bank rolled quarters

  • WQuarterFreddieWQuarterFreddie Posts: 2,849 ✭✭✭✭✭

Yup. Also, start paying in cash and check your change. Worst case you can use non W quarters to replace the ones you find in the bank rolls! Enjoy the thrill of the hunt!😎

    W quarter for 2019 explained

Program was extended to include the five national park 2020 quarters with the addition of a privy mark on the obverse. No W for the one remaining national park quarter that just got issued in 2021.

Best chances of finding an unc. W quarter is in a bank wrapped $10 roll or sealed $500 box of $10 rolls. Banks get these from their contracted armored car carrier. Carriers supply banks/large businesses with mostly re-rolled older quarters (which may contain a circulated W) but occasionally deliver a box or more of new quarters they got from the fed reserve branch bank. Unc. Ws are mixed in with these new (2019, 2020) quarters.

Fed reserve banks get all the new coins minted for circulation and disperse them through local armored carriers when the carriers need them to supplement their rotating supply of older quarters. I'm still coming across the occasional box of new quarters from 2019. I suspect there are still a lot of 2019, 2020 quarters at the reserve banks awaiting the carriers' need for them.

The fact that these rolls of new quarters are in carrier marked wrappers (loomis, brinks, etc.) tells me they are getting the 200,000 coin bags of new quarters from the fed bank and rolling them back at the carriers local headquarters. This would explain the appearance of some older quarters in the rolls of new quarters, probably in the rolling tub at the time the new quarters got dumped in.

Did you submit your Tallgrass or did you buy it?

I'm just sitting here wondering if we should "hold off" submitting these thing now. I'm wondering if a 67 coin today, would come back 68 or 69, 10 or 20 years from now!?!?

If it is to a teller, you should bring them coffee and muffins. lol

Two of my students are bank tellers.

One of them told me yesterday that a customer had bought a full tray of uncirculated quarters (10 rolls, $100) and they were all W mintmarks with the 75V privy mark. She was amazed at how much they were selling for on eBay when I told her.

The other student found 2 Tall Grass with the V75 last week in her drawer and was also shocked at the value.

    Keep searching!

Uh.....first story sounds far fetched UNLESS the tellers were searching quarters and accumulated them for the customer. In my 2 plus years of searching boxes of new coin rolls the most I found in 1 roll was 8 W quarters.

I have never heard of anyone finding one roll of all W quarters let alone ten!

They are both now collecting W quarters :) after I showed them how much they are going for on eBay. Who knows, maybe one of them will end up being a coin collector.

I haven't really been on the look out for them and am not collecting them. I did enjoy seeing the excitement each student had when I showed them the eBay sales. These are both college students working at 2 different banks.

    She just emailed me this:

As I mentioned before, we received full boxes of these quarters. They have since been given out to customer so I can't check and see if they were all the same but based upon my experience, they all had the W mint and V75 anniversary. We received at least 5 boxes of the Tallgrass 2020 quarters in the last few months.

Understood. I am just giving you my opinion and experience. My guess is the customer bought 10 rolls of 2020 new coin rolls and told the teller that they may contain W with privy marks.😎

Sorry. Again, I think she is assuming that because they are all Tallgrass new coin rolls that they are all W which is incorrect.

I have searched over 10 boxes of all Tallgrass new coin rolls and the most I have found in one roll is 4 and the most I found in a box of 2000 is 38.

Most of the boxes averaged 14 to 20.

Yes. There are a fair amount of S quarters but not many. They are in old coin roll boxes and I average one S every 10 boxes. They are easy to spot because they are thicker than other Mint marks so I confuse them for W quarters until I see the S on the obverse 😂🤣

You can't really see it in these pictures but have you guys noticed the W's have a distinctive look/difference, compared to the P's?

Looking at the edge of the rolls., they all stand out. Not sure if it's the reeding or the thickness of the coins.

Good catch - most of the business strike "S" quarters are around half the mintage of the "W" quarters, but due to lack of publicity they sell for a lot less.
