I now see this card selling for over $1000 in a PSA 8.
Would love to hear thoughts on this card and it’s potential growth.
Could this be a card which becomes increasingly popular ? Anyone know the back story etc?
Thanks

Really...nobody has anything to say about this at all?? Cmon.
Someone locally is trying to sell a raw one for $1000. I offered $200 about 2 years ago. It’s maybe a 6-7 psa. He still has it for sale. I know nothing about these but thought it looked cool
Everything Jordan is wonderful and you can't go wrong with almost any of it. That said, I think some of it feels a little bit more manufactured than organic. The card itself wasn't a holy grail collectible in its time. But the picture would become one of the most iconic and widely owned sports posters ever, and I actually think the original poster has more relative upside as a nostalgia piece. It's a good investment, though regardless. Any card that is a short print before cards were being stamped as short prints - those will tend to hold value even if the market corrects.
Be very careful as there are a lot of counterfeits out there that are not easily distinguishable. The image on the counterfeit versions are cropped with less of the buildings in the skyline showing.

I AGREE. You only want to go with PSA...but how this promo card can be worth so much really surprises me. They used to say the sticker would be worth more than the actual card....I don’t think that will happen, but if the Nike promo card can go for so much who knows anymore!
I agree that there are a lot of counterfeits out there. Specifically, I believe most of the unopened packs out there are counterfeit, even though they sell for good money. I, too, would only buy graded, but as maddux69 said, you can tell the real ones from the fake ones, mainly from the amount of skyline in the lower left hand corner.

Get them while you can, any high grade jordan RC is the best investment out there IMO
WHILE i agree with you....how is this NIKE 1985 promo card considered a highly grade rookie card.
I think there are differences between mainstream rookie cards and other issues that were released at the same time. You might say they are the difference between rookie cards and rookie-ish cards, if that makes any sense at all. I would think that the 85 promo would fall into the latter category. They will probably never hit true rookie card values, but they're still great items to have. I think @1951WheatiesPremium has been employing this strategy with his ancillary Mantle items, and my guess is that he's done pretty darn well with them.
Another one in the same boat is the 1985 Interlake Jordan. It is still relatively unknown, heck I even typed it in the eBay search bar and it didn't auto-populate. There are a lot of reprints of the Interlake floating around now as well, so to anyone looking to purchase be very careful and only go with that has been authenticated by a TPG. I think the Interlake has the bigger upside vs the Nike Promo as there isn't an abundance of them relative to Jordan collectors.

I think the Nike has a little ways to move. At least I hope it does.

Love this card. Bought a sealed set and am seriously thinking about cracking & grading. the other 5 cards will sell (with good grades) for more than I paid for the set, and I will keep the Jordan in my PC.
Please be warned that there are many sealed sets out there that are reprints. That's where the reprint Jordan's come from. If I was you, I wouldn't open it. Right now, you don't know if its a real pack or not, but if you open, it you certainly will know very quickly. in fact, I hate to say it, but I wouldn't be surprised if all of the sealed packs out there are reprints. I have no idea, but all of the packs I ever opened, probably around six to eight had reprints in them. This was back when packs were somewhere around $5 each. I had the same idea to break up the sets, grade, and resell, but, again, they were reprints. I ended up sending them all back, no questions asked, even though I opened some of them up. My guess is that the seller also knew they were reprints.

Bought mine from a long time Nike Employee...checked it carefully...has the "vent holes" you would expect. There are a couple bad-looking "sealed" sets on ebay right now...
Cool. Sounds like you know this stuff better than I do. Could you post picks of your pack? I'd be curious to see what a true set looks like.

Todd,
You know me all too well. But I can surprise once in a while, too:
