Gold CAC stickers and Reconsideration service

drddmdrddm Posts: 5,350 ✭✭✭✭✭

I’m pretty sure this is a no brainer, but has anyone had the experience or heard of someone sending in a PCGS coin with a gold sticker using the Reconsideration service and NOT receiving at least a full point upgrade?

Will this be forever known as the "Cornell Maneuver?" ;)

That doesn’t sound at all like a no-brainer to me.

Did that just once, with a cross. Got the point upgrade and sent it in again, wanting more. Got a plus.

I'd probably keep the elusive gold sticker next time.

I have not ever heard of that happening (not getting the upgrade) but I have seen 2 gold stickers where I would not have wanted to try it.
In both cases very pretty toning hiding something I did not think the TPG would overlook.

Yes, there is a 1915 MPL with a gold sticker that did not upgrade that was discussed here a few years back. JA put a gold on it again after regrade. Gold is supposed to mean "at least one point higher". The tightness I've seen JA use them, I think they need to be a lock 1 1/2 points higher to receive the elusive bean. I would keep the bean if it were me. JMHO.

The gold bean says what you want to hear. Why spend the money unless the coin is 2 points higher?

I will keep my lone CAC Gold in tact, 1872-S H10CMM Below PCGS AU58 , it was bad enough that I gave up the OGH to have the variety attributed MPD FS-302.

I would not try to upgrade any of my gold stickered coins, but was just curious if JA’s opinion usually meant an upgrade on a reconsideration or regrade submission to PCGS, but I guess based on the post regarding the 1915 MPL, that’s not always the case.

Regardless of how highly anyone values JA’s opinion, there’s no way PCGS would agree with him that they were too strict, every time someone submitted a gold-stickered coin. I bet there are plenty of examples other than the 1915 cent.

That makes sense. I just wondered because of how infrequent gold stickers are awarded, relatively speaking of course, that it would mean AT LEAST a point upgrade when regraded.

Another question...has anyone submitted a coin to CAC that was awarded a gold bean and then discussed with JA what he felt was the actual grade? Just curious how often this has happened and if he has said that the coin was more than 1.5 grades higher?

I owned a $5 Lib that earned a Gold sticker at CAC and I was shocked. Hoping for a Green bean this particular piece was clearly circulated with somewhat beat up surfaces. It did have excellent color and luster but in no way would I expect an upgrade if sent back to PCGS.

The problem with this is that opinions and grades change over time. I'd better stop here.

i've owned 3 gold stickered coins. Two of the three upgraded (one by me and the other subsequent to me selling it). The remaining coin is staying in it's current holder I believe it will add some stick value when i sell my overall collection.

I have received many green beans but never a gold. My inclination would be to leave the gold on the slab, it only cost 15 bucks to get. To "reconsider" would cost a lot more and I would lose the gold bean...

I had 2 gold bean. A 42 and 44S Mercury Dime. They were in OGH PCGS.

I had a classic Head Large cent, that was gold beaned, I left it alone becuase it would have had to grade 3 points higher to make it worth breaking it out, so I auctioned it off , it did okay, not great, but decent.

I do not have any gold beans, however, if I did, I would leave them intact. I believe the value is obvious without reholdering, and leave that exercise/cost to the next owner. Cheers, RickO

In my experience most Gold CAC coins sell for more than one grade up price wise. So I just leave mine alone. ASs Rick said let the next owner spend the money.

I think it was extremely rude to call Rick an “ASs”.🤭

My grade opinions in 2x2s don't sell as well as CAC stickered coins.

+1 - The only exception might be where the value increase is huge to the next grade and it is a registry coin where the actual label grade will matter more despite a CAC gold.

My experience has been that gold stickers are usually only awarded to coins that look ridiculously under graded at the label grade so I would be surprised if a coin only went to a plus and not the next grade up.

I'm guessing that virtually 100% of people who'd submit such a coin would check the box on the form not to upgrade the coin unless it's at least a full grade bump, so we'll probably never know empirically. In general, I agree that the vast majority of gold stickered coins (I've seen) appear to be virtual lock upgrades (beyond just a plus).
