What are your 2021 Collecting Goals?

robert67robert67 Posts: 1,342 ✭✭✭✭

My main goal will be to collect some non-card items that I find interesting.

My other goal will be to avoid most Topps new releases.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone plans for the new collecting year.

My #1 collecting goal in 2020 was to reach 70% complete on the Yaz master set. I was on a good pace to reach that goal in the first part of the year, but had very few pickups in the past 6 months. Also, the master set composite is always growing.

So with that in mind, I’d like this to be the year I reach 70% on the master set. At this moment, I’d need 10 more items. I’m sure it will take 15+ items to get there as the checklist continues to slowly grow.

    Other goals:

    1. Finally get around to grading my growing pile, especially the 30 or so Venezuelan Topps in the pile.

    2. Get to 100% complete on my John Hannah master set. Will take me 3 Topps stickers to get there, which is harder than it sounds.

    3. Obtain a nice Babe Parilli 1951 Topps Magic RC or a Richard Seymour 2001 Topps Chrome RC. I’m working on the Patriots Team HOF registry and those are the only tough ones left.

    Yaz Master Set
    #1 Gino Cappelletti master set
    #1 John Hannah master set

Also collecting Andre Tippett, Patriots Greats' RCs, Dwight Evans, 1964 Venezuelan Topps, 1974 Topps Red Sox

    1. Finish Rickey Henderson Basic Topps Set
    2. Finish Andre Tippett Basic Topps Set
    3. Need a solid PSA 8 1973 O-P-CHEE Dwight Evans
    4. Expand and continue adding to Roberto Alomar Basic and Collectors Set.

I didn’t know you collect Tippett! Me too, he’s my favorite player of all time. I completed his basic Topps set all autographed. Most are slabbed by PSA/DNA but my RC and 2 others are there now.

    1. Keep chipping away at the 1946 Propagandas Montiel set. I now need just 11 more. But since these are incredibly rare. I have all the stars and one (Oswald Bluege) may not even exist, it will be tough sledding.

    2. Keep chipping away at the Mantle Master set. I’m going to adjust my strategy somewhat in 2021 but there’s always going to be tough cards simply because I only have the two kidneys.

    3. Create a new spec - a lot of stuff out there needs cataloging. From every era. It’s fun and I can do one; that would make four years in a row of at least one.

    4. Help more collectors here on CU.

    5. Make Chicago

I just looked back at my 2020 goals, and I didn't do too well. A few projects occupied the gross majority of my funds in 2020, projects that didn't appear on my radar in January 2020, but just kind of materialized. Some of those projects will spill over into 2021:

    1) Finish 1980 Topps rack box
    2) Find an empty 1980 Topps rack box
    3) Finish 1984 OPC rack box
    4) Continue my search for high-grade dead-centered OPC Gretzkys
    5) Continue my Greenwell PSA 10 quest
    6) Chip away at a few player runs in high-grade dead-centered PSAs
    7) And generally let my heart guide me.

Save money and attend the National. Already reserved my hotel for 2021.

Purchase a high grade vintage card. Perhaps a Mantle or finally even add a Jackie Robinson card to the collection. With the recent modern boom, everyone has shifted their attention to ultra modern and so this may be a good time to buy a vintage card since they haven't seen a big increase since 2016 so I feel one may be do sooner than later.

Re-think my strategies. I do a lot of flipping and buying high-end raw cards and getting them graded to re-sell and use the profit to buy cards for my personal collection. It's a very time consuming process and the turnaround times at PSA mean I am in the negative with cash flow a lot of the time.

try to continue my 83 psa set of hall of fame players. thinking of starting a psa 8 run of hall of fame players in my 1975 topps set. i already have the main players but i do not have the semistar hall of famers in psa 8 grade.

  • gemintgemint Posts: 6,101 ✭✭✭✭✭

Keep making progress on completing my graded sets in 8 or better. I'm still 2 away for my 1966 set and am now focusing on my 1964 set. I'd like to add some more unopened as well, depending on what hits the market.

I'm with you. I have been on a break from buying for about 3 months now but it has helped me get focused again.

I am a collector at heart, not a flipper or a seller. I'll leave that to others.

    Payoff debt from 2020.
Then try to fill 1 rarer item on my list.
Cracker jack grover Cleveland Alexander would be great.

    1. Continue pursuing my collection of 1971’s and getting them graded
Continue Convincing my wife not to sell them
    2. Finish my high-grade 1970-71 talboy basketball set and subbing to PSA

When 1 and 2 slow down, work on my high grade raw ‘75 set
    3. I have A TON of pack-fresh ‘81 baseball, so I think I’ll work on a really nice, centered set of that too.
    4. Figure out what to do with the case of ‘81 vending (baseball) I just picked up from heritage, though probably start with having them wrapped if Steve deems them worthy lol.
    5. Tone down the impulse buys of other things?

I want to finish off my collection of the last Topps card of every baseball hall of famer. I am about halfway there now..

For 2021 I will continue to upgrade my Topps baseball 1961 set from all PSA 8's to all PSA 9's. 2020 was a tough year because the cards I need are the rarer and costlier star cards or tough low pop ones.

Just to keep chipping away at HOF PSA rookies for baseball, basketball and football. Just recently started collecting football and basketball so I’d like to get most of the cheaper more affordable ones out of the way first. Also continue to sell off my ungraded rookie collection. It just got out of hand and didn’t have enough space so something had to go.

    What I Collect:

PSA HOF Baseball Postwar Rookies Set Registry- (Currently 80.51% Complete)

PSA Pro Football HOF Rookie Players Set Registry- (Currently 19.80% Complete)

PSA Basketball HOF Players Rookies Set Registry- (Currently 6.02% Complete)

I've got APB's out on a handful of vintage Hockey and finish my '53 Red Man set.

I would like to pick up even just one card for my signed sets. I haven't stumbled across a card I need for my sets in about three years. Here is where I stand with them:

    1960 Fleer - Need 5 to complete
    1962 Fleer - Need 2 to complete
    1965 Topps - Need 1 to complete

I don't really have any other goals. I will continue to pick up modern Alworth cards I need as I find them and I'd like to keep current on modern Johnny Robinson issues, though that might not be possible now that a 1/1 has been produced.

Todd Tobias - Grateful Collector - I focus on autographed American Football League sets, Fleer & Topps, 1960-1969, and lacrosse cards.
