What Do I Have Here?

I just now found a 2 dollar bill. It is a series 1976. It has a postal stamp of Anaheim, California April 13, 1976 on it and there is a 13¢ postage stamp with the Betsy Ross flag and Liberty Hall affixed to the upper right corner. What do I have here.

A very popular diversion in the 70's. Sort of like a numismatic Beanie Baby.
I've seen a lot, usually with state stamps.............never seen a Betsy Ross stamp though.

Hard to see unless you enlarge it but it's also cancelled on the same date as yours. All the cool kids did it that day.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
First day cancellation I remember them well
First day of issue. The canceled stamp proves that it was a first day of issue note.

I bet post offices were mildly irritated stamping all these, but also glad to be selling so much postage. I wasn't around back then. I just put together a display of 50 of these notes, one for each state.

you have a newly issued 2 dollar bill that was postal canceled on the 13th of 1976. the only way to get a issued date was to get the new bills from a bank that could not issue them until the 13th and the run to the post office and have them place a stamp on the bill and have the post office cancel them to conform that the bill was a first day of issue. most of the bills were affixed with the bi-centennial stamp so others with different stamps are more "uncommon"
Kennedys are my quest...
I actually remember doing just that

there are first day quarter rolls with cancelled stamps on them. I never heard a complaint from back then about a PO not liking to do it. but ... how many would admit to it ...
now that the PO is soundly into losing a billion a year, perhaps they should promote such activities.
side note: you were my 300th like, thanks
mine were "canceled" in Everett Ma
Kennedys are my quest...
I think Everett is near Boston?
They have food................... and Casino

ChrisH that is AWESOME!

Thanks, everyone. Actually, I could have gone to the post office with it myself. I was working in Anaheim at that exact time. But I don't remember. Old age is a female dog!

Thanks! I've had the bills for over a year and only just got around to making the display last week. It's a pretty big display being two 24"x36" frames, but it would've been unwieldy and probably very expensive as a single giant frame. I still haven't decided where to hang it!

Anaheim.
Any chance you work at Disneyland?
Wild guess but it sounds like you might have a 2 dollar bill with a stamp on it.
Wild guess but it sounds like you might have read the first post of this thread. Especially the part about me finding a 2 dollar bill with a stamp on it.
No, Deathstar -7, I did not work at the Magic Kingdom. But.... the Matterhorn was always visible just beyond the stacks of 2x4's that I was moving around with my Mega-Hyster. Now THAT was an "E" ride!
I have a couple of those First-Day stamped $2 bills as well. PLUS I have FDC's with each state's flag, cancelled in each state's First-Day-Of-Issue location. Would have been a neat pair-up with a bill for each as well............ Neat display ChrisH821!!
Sounds like we have a consensus
@ChrisH821... Wow... That is an impressive collection... How long did it take to complete? I did not even know about these... was living out of the country for much of that time....Cheers, RickO
I bought them all at once from a member here so I kind of cheated in that respect. They are all sequential so someone back in 1976 spent a lot of money to have a complete set that day.

@ChrisH821.... No... not cheating... some people by albums full of coins... Just another path to getting what you like. Some collectors enjoy a long, slow hunt to build a set.... some just want a set of nice coins/bills. Cheers, RickO
I still have the 50 state set my Dad had cancelled at our local post office on the first day of issue. No gorgeous display like @ChrisH821, however.

I'm not sure we were the "cool kids" (I myself had ten of them stamped and cancelled that day). Anyone have one with a Milford, Nebraska cancellation? I'm thinking we were the NERDS....
I was annoyed about having to buy a stamp and put it on the note. Why couldn't they just stamp the note?
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Anaheim? I remember driving to the Atwood post office thinking that no one else would to get one of these cancelled with an unusual postmark
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
Neat! I grew up near Caldwell and had a bunch of friends who lived there.
Forgot to mention the most significant part of this... April 13th (1743) was Jefferson's birthday

I remember reading somewhere that many of these first day stamped $2. Bills, were stamped after the first day of issue, using the first day of issue date.
Does anybody know if this is true?
That would be "No Fair!"
The Postal Service had to get something out of the whole deal.
