An Ode to Odd Denominations
"Half Cents, Two Cents, Three Cents, and Twenty Cents… They’re some of the many obsolete coins about which virtually all non-collectors know nothing. Yet, they are among the most colorful of United States coins, and their relative affordability means many collectors can incorporate them into their collections. The body of United States Odd Denomination coinage generally includes five long-retired types, including Half Cents (1793-1857), Two Cents (1864-1873), Three Cent Nickels (1865-1889), Three Cent Silvers (1851-1873), and Twenty Cent Pieces (1875-1878)."

Great article!

I love the 2 cent designs along with the 3 cent nickels. Beautiful coins!

I like the odd denominations. I have a full set of these with the exception of the 1873-
I also have an AU set of braided Hair 1/2c.
Great article... I have always liked the Two Cent pieces... have had a couple since I was a youngster....Cheers, RickO
Telling it like it is!
At least Classic Commem collectors can take solace in this!

Good article
I actually dabbled in all of the "odd denomination" series but stuck with the 2 Cent Pieces.
I have all the BS coins along with the major varieties, also have all the proofs with both of the 1873's ( nix the 1864 SM)
After I upgrade a few coins I think I will move onto another one of my favorites.....20 cent pieces.
As far as the two cent varieties go there's only one that I really like and that is the 1867 DDO-001. I have a PCGS XF45 example but no image. It's part of my type coin doubled die set.
I agree with you that sometimes with coins and our hobby there’s a lot of BS. 😂

I just love my BS coins!
Most of the odd balls are short and cheap (?), and as far as my current series copper and largish, I love copper.
I also have to think about time...tic...tic...tic. That's why my next adventure will be 20 cent pieces, it's a very short series, 4 coins Right? Oh yea, the proofs and that pesky 1876CC.
Maybe just the 4 high-grade BS 20 Cent Pieces and call it a day.
Very tough coin in higher grades WITH a decent strike.
I just happened to trade a few desirable coins (+ cash) for a PCGS MS63 Brn CAC example a few years ago, and as you, I do not have an image.
I also paid way to much.
I collected all those series in LOC albums. I need only 1 more coin for the 2cent-3cent-20cent and shield nickel (LOC album #35). An 1863 3-cent silver. As for half cent (LOC album # 36), I need about 5 more. This effort has taken me many years as the circulation strikes of three cent silvers dated 1863-1872 in circulated condition are very difficult to find.
As for overpaying, a friend of mine once said "At least you have it". I have overpaid for a lot of my coins, but at least I have them.
Of all the odd denominations, my favorite is the 20c coin. It probably never should have been made, though. Or maybe made with a different size and composition.
