What I can't figure out is he calls it a "coin of the confederation" and not a coin of the Confederacy. What 'Confederation'?

This thread was a waste of disk space. >:)

I know Canada had/has a Confederation (bit not until 1867).

Maybe it is from the Canadian soldiers who fought in the Civil War? :#

and if any of you wonder why switzerland's top level domain is .ch it is because the proper name is as on the coin above.

but I too found the use of confederation and confederacy by the op confusing.I suppose the confederacy is a confederation, but the common term is confederacy after all.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this “relic” shows up on EBay soon.

  • ambro51ambro51 Posts: 13,941 ✭✭✭✭✭

As a relic, possibly personally identifiable as being from Hunter McGuire, the piece has historic value and importance. To directly connect the relic, I see no way aside from direct photographic evidence of the “ID medallion” being worn during the Civil War era by McGuire. Secondary verification would be a letter or diary mention, or a personal recollection by a witness to him wearing it. ••••. To try and connect this relic to the “mystery” and rethinking the relic into being a coin, or something like a coin, is defeating the purpose of its real useage. Often, the simplest ID is often the correct one. •••••. I’d like to see an XRF analysis. Is it silver? Anyway, the posts by the OP bear no resemblance to the eloquent writing on the website (incidentally the domain was first registered August 2020, Whois.com also gives the email address of the registrant). When reading the posts he’s written make me think I’m reading posts by Latka Gravis.

    The relic shown is:

    1) not a bracteate (those date from the Medieval and Middle Ages)

    2) not a coin.

If the OP can't even get those two facts straight then there isn't much else I would trust from the story. ;)

    compare and contrast

    side 1side 2
And that is the time when Jefferson Davie staff arrived in Richmond Va. It could be that by some under thinking that Judah P. Benjamin might have handed the $20 Silver double eagle Certificate Rebel coin, one of a kind made to Jackson to pin on Dr. McGuire. But the coin being made at New Orleans Mint, places Robert lovett Jr. seal made in 1862 a later date and states a west Va. seal being made, so that statement found we have totally kick the coin at the right time and place it was made and has been proven by fact, the New Orleans mint, The more I go over my work the more I learn too, LOL Me and are research team are now bowing to you all, Thank You, Thank you all very much, We are glad to have been a service to you all in light of this great history study. Having some good luck and faith after 51 years of relic hunting and finding this coin and 18 Months of study of this wonderful Confederate war coin. We must say it is a beautiful study and story. -SH- Doc-Num-46186150-y

    REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE-STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL
I am Dr. Bakare Tunde, the cousin of Nigerian Astronaut, Air Force Major Abacha Tunde. He was the first African in space when he made a secret flight to the Salyut 6 space station in 1979. He was on a later Soviet spaceflight, Soyuz T-16Z to the secret Soviet military space station Salyut 8T in 1989. He was stranded there in 1990 when the Soviet Union was dissolved. His other Soviet crew members returned to earth on the Soyuz T-16Z, but his place was taken up by return cargo. There have been occasional Progrez supply flights to keep him going since that time. He is in good humor, but wants to come home.

In the 14-years since he has been on the station, he has accumulated flight pay and interest amounting to almost $ 15,000,000 American Dollars. This is held in a trust at the Lagos National Savings and Trust Association. If we can obtain access to this money, we can place a down payment with the Russian Space Authorities for a Soyuz return flight to bring him back to Earth. I am told this will cost $ 3,000,000 American Dollars. In order to access the his trust fund we need your assistance.

Consequently, my colleagues and I are willing to transfer the total amount to your account or subsequent disbursement, since we as civil servants are prohibited by the Code of Conduct Bureau (Civil Service Laws) from opening and/ or operating foreign accounts in our names.

Needless to say, the trust reposed on you at this juncture is enormous. In return, we have agreed to offer you 20 percent of the transferred sum, while 10 percent shall be set aside for incidental expenses (internal and external) between the parties in the course of the transaction. You will be mandated to remit the balance 70 percent to other accounts in due course.

how do you like the side by side?

side 2 is one of those famous rackets. Side 1 is horribly written and makes it hard to believe just from that alone.

I really feel sorry for these people, it takes a gain to try and beat up on one mans coin, O00 That be Bracteates coin again these people so are so desperately are trying not to understand and mention as they right up bad views for collectors to read, Here's the kicker, they just thank coin U.S, they do not thank Confederate States witch Virginia was the 8th state to secede, They are protecting there interest and to sale there coins, and coinofglory is knocking them down hard here and people know it, and there scared as h-ll. Now we understand what all there fuss is really about here just one go to
James Gallier Jr. the " Galliers House " look at the front iron gate, has the celtic same mark on it as the coin..... That is a block and one half from the old New Orleans mint. Gallier made a rebel coin design but never ever made a gold coin, we got the real one here, these guys are running down rabbit holes and don't want to share the truth that we have here in large to knock these boys down hard, let them dig there self's a good hole then we will strike ! Been waiting for this a long time now.

why would the southern bred use something celtic?

So what’s the address so I can help bring the stranded astronaut home. His story is heartbreaking. BTW, I’m still trying to solicit funds to search for the Minnow. I hear the crew is doing well but the professor is running low on coconuts for his radio. PM me for my gofundme account.

The sad thing about this mess is that the relic looks like it could be linked Dr Hunter McGuire, who appears to be a civil war figure of some importance. I did a little bit of searching, and found his story to be interesting. Here is the Wiki summary

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_McGuire

However, the OP continues with this charade of insisting that the relic is some sort of heretofore unknown Confederate coin, even though it has nothing in common with coinage of the era. If he was able to do some serious research, or enlist the help of knowledgeable scholars, the relic might add a small piece to our understanding of the people and events of that significant period of our country's history.

The semi-coherant ramblings on his website do nothing to further the research on this piece, and may even be detrimental to understanding what significance the relic may have. I only hope that someday, it can be properly researched. What a shame.
