I just got my first one, although to my amateur eye it looks as nice as many MS-63's I've seen.

Real nice coin!
Would have guessed 62-63 on that one. Congrats
Probably light hairlines not showing up in photo. You can count on it that somethings there.
I used to own this:
It's an 1839-D Quarter Eagle, which is a tough coin. Whether or not it's an MS-60 could be debated, but that is the assigned grade.
The holder states MS60, but the coin doesn't look like it.
I agree that PCGS no doubt made the right call. I should have re-written my OP to eliminate any perceived complaint on my part. It is an eye-opener regarding my grading ability, however.
1839-D quarter eagles are certainly very tough. I occasionally follow them on various auctions since I'm slowly putting together an 1839 mint set. Yours is very nice.

There are a few very nice 60s on this page but what in the world happened in the grading room with this one is beyond me. It must have something wrong with it that I can't see.

In hand I don't find anything to justify the grade either.
Does the coin have any lustre, and might there be some hairlines hiding below the toning?
I just looked at it. No hairlines but it does lack luster.
MS60 is a grade not often encountered on a PCGS slab.
I bought this in the early 90's. It is in an ANACS holder.
The battle scars of all the good times
I'll bet that's it. Typically, an MS60 is either beat to hell, badly hairlined (it's easier for proofs to be hairlined heavily and just reduced in grade, where eventually business strikes get called cleaned), lacklustre, or weakly struck. They all play together, and depending on what's there, you end up in the 60-62 range. I've handled plenty of 62s (60 and 61s also, but they're generally rarer), and they usually have at least some lustre. So if a coin is really flat, it's often 61 or 60, and there isn't much difference between those two grades.
@airplanenut ,thank you for your insight. I totally agree with you. Luckily, even though this coin lacks luster, it makes up for it in color. At least for me it does. Definitely better than a dull white coin.
You have to love that generic gold!
I'm guessing that a few of these MS60 coins would get a gold CAC sticker.

@brianc1959 That 1888 is a real beauty.... I think the cheek chatter and slight dings on the reverse ribbon may be the reason it is not graded higher. Still a very nice coin. I do not have any 60's....Cheers, RickO
I don't think that can be enough. An MS60 is often really, really beat up, and the chatter here isn't nearly strong enough to qualify. I'm curious if @brianc1959 has the coin in hand yet, or just the photo we've seen. I ask because, with the photos showing a coin that looks like it could be a 63, I'm guessing there's more than meets the eye, such as weaker lustre, some hairlines, etc. Hairlines can often be easily hidden in a photo, and depending on how the lustre sits on the coin, it can be made to look better or worse with lighting. Since the 60 grade is so uncommon, I have to imagine there's something we can't see. This isn't a case of a coin that looks like a 64 or 65 getting a 63... a coin really has to earn a 60.
@airplanenut ... I agree Jeremy...Just could not see anything else in the pictures... Cheers, RickO
Nice double eagle! I agree looks better than 60.
That Columbian coin should grade higher
MS60 coins can fit the ANA definition well or not.
