My most strangest transaction.

Lol. Listen to this. One of my friends from work, text me with a picture of many shelves of raw coins. All different denominations. He told me he was at a mall in Michigan City, Indiana. Never been there. He knew I am a coin collector and he said when he seen these, he right away thought of me. Lol. Cool!
So, I thought, how nice of him? Then, I had a thought? After seeing the picture of all the coins. I decided to ask if he'll do me a favor? I asked if I were to pick a coin from his picture, if he would pick it up for me and I'll pay him when I go back to work Tuesday? He said, "sure!" Lol. Here's the coin I chose. 1942p Walker supposedly being a VF? for $16+. I bought it with hope's that this will turn out to have the DDR variety? If not, so what. Lol

I picked the coin circled. The 1942p Walker VF for $16+
I didn't bother asking my friend about the details on the coin, variety or not, because he doesn't have a clue on any knowledge of coin collecting. So, I'm just playing it by chance. Lol.
Here is what I very much like to see on the coin that my friend purchased for me after I picked it strictly by picture alone. Just seeing the obverse.

Is this a variety you are trying to cherry pick?
It's kind of time consuming but if you can search junk silver it is not a really hard to find coin - in my experience anyway.
Cool variety -- but still relatively unknown to the coin collecting "masses."

Not impartictular. It was just a "spare of the moment " transaction. My friend texted the picture and While he was there, I'd thought I would ask him to pay for the coin that I would pick? So I seen the '42 Walker for only $16, then I thought maybe it could have the variety?

"...for only $16.." are the wrong words to use for a circulated 1942 Walker. It's worth roughly "only" half that amount.

Even if it is FS-801 it's worth about $16 in that grade. I guess the thrill of a successful hunt would make up for that, tho.

I guess it would be if you find what you are looking for. It's not the method I would use. Assuming you had an average of 150,000 strikes per die with a mintage of 47,000,000 I think that would give you about a 3% chance of finding the d die (I hope my math is correct.) In my experience both at shows/shops and online I think that is a little low. It used to be more like 10% when only a few specialists and cherrypickers were looking for it. I found about a dozen Mint State pieces and twice that of AU coins.

If Tuesday, when I meet up with my friend/coin, and it turns out to be the variety. It wouldn't be called the normal "cherry pick", it would be called "pulling a rabbit out of the hat!" This part is my thrill! :D

Lol. Yes, today is the day I go back to work after my 2 week vacation. Bummer! Oh well? I won't find out till much later in the day, 5:00-6:00. As soon as I find out, I'll try to post and clue you guys in. Thanks for the concern. One more thing, I was going through the Cherry Pickers' Guide, this morning and I forgot about the other possible variety on the 1942p Walkers. The DDO "double chin/breast/gown?" I do realize, like someone mentioned above, whichever variety it should happen to be, if any, is not a "quit my job" valued coin. Lol. Esp. In that condition. It's the thrill of the hunt, as well as, another silver Walker in my collection. Also, my friend that first text me to start this crazy adventure might begin to be interested in coins? ;)

You have a much better chance at winning if you actually look at the coin before you buy it. But if you’re not going to do that, it’s better not to pay nearly double what a regular example typically brings.

I think he knew the rules before making the purchase sight unseen. He also doesn’t seemed too bothered by the results. I just choose not to deflate his passion for the hobby like most of his purchases seem to elicit by some people.

I understand and you sound like you have a very good attitude. My point was, while you were right that “you can’t win if you don’t play”, there are other ways to play and significantly increase your odds.

After one of the recent mega Powerball drawings where a friend made a similar comment, I noted that I won because I bought zero tickets and lost zero dollars. He retorted that he won $10. He also spent $120 on tickets.
