I hate to start another Legend thread, but...
...this pisses me off.
I just got the October 26 issue of CW. A full page article on the recent Legend sale discusses the two big coins that failed to sell. Yet, there is not one word about the rest of the sale and all of the things that did sell, mostly for strong prices. The article puts Legend and the entire coin market in the worst possible light.
Ironically, a full page ad for Legend’s next sale appears on the adjacent page. And CW doesn’t have a lot of full page advertisers these days. Somebody at CW is not using his head!

So it sounds like your saying that CW should pander to Legend and not discuss any topic that they don't run past or get Legend's blessing on?

No. I’m saying what I said.

@MrEureka .... I think you were quite clear...and I agree. Cheers, RickO
The CW article is negatively focused only on the two coins that didnt sell which is not a balanced representation. As an advertiser, why would I continue to direct money to an outlet that is applying a negative, not neutral, lens to my business?

I only watched the first half of the auction, but I thought the majority of items sold were weak. Did the second half turn it around?
This is one of the best coments I have heard in a very long time. It sums up how a lot of people feel every day. My jaw hit the ground when I read it. Boosibri you are one very smart man!
That's putting a lot of words that he didn't say, into his mouth.

Agreed the coin market needs more positivity. Lets see the stakeholders spend some more resources on media exposure on the web. I'm all for that and a PR firm to consult with ANA in conjunction with the stakeholders on numismatic educational videos and linkage to historical events, YouTube, cable, free TV etc.
Lots of words out there but little action.
The Roadrunner collection of toned Morgans did very well, plus some other toned coins did the same. The gold CAC 1858 half dime went for moon money. just some examples.
I agree with what @MrEureka posted too, the auction was more than those two coin "flops".

Andy- as you know, CoinWorld isn’t the dominant force that it once was. CoinWeek and other online publications are very influential now.
Which article is this? The one I see on the main page of CoinWorld.com is titled “Market Analysis: Unsold top rarities not an indicator”.
In said article, the author states “Great rarities going unsold say little about the broader coin market, which is still thriving.”
Am I referencing the correct article? I don’t have full access, just the free, public version of the website.

Yes, that’s it. And I stand corrected. He could have made the market seem even worse if he had tried harder.

I read the companion article in the paper version of CW. I wouldn’t call it negative exactly but some of the things written, IMO, would have been more appropriate to write about before the auction. I do think the page placement with the Legend ad was a mistake. They could have moved their articles around to avoid that.
Now I know CW isn't a pumper and have even greater respect foe them, fear & balanced news is best. Most of the time most dealers are only stating/finding the positives.
My point was that the article is NOT balanced. Probably not intentionally, but still a disservice to all.

Your point was clear as a bell, but I believe you are pretty one-sided being a dealer and want only positive spins, which I understand since you make your living in the business. But I want both the good and the bad. We got the bad from CW, thus they are balancing all the other news outlets run by or siding with dealers that rely on the money spent at auctions and at dealerships.
Sensationalist articles sell media better than balanced articles. It appears that this trend has made its way to the world of coins.
I did not put any words in his mouth I asked if I was reading his post correctly. You would know that by the question mark at the end of my comment, perhaps you missed that???????????????????
Also this post was started with a post full of misinformation and is in violation of rule 2

Could you try and insert more opinions without supporting facts in one paragraph please?

I didn't miss the question mark or your apparent mischaracterization of his comments that accompanied it.

I thought the article was "Fair and Balanced". The unsold coins were truly in a league of their own with no relevance to the coin world in which we live.
Bruce Morelan is quoted as saying, “I’m actually relieved that it didn’t sell and I’m ecstatic it’s still in my collection.”
OK...
The article appears to emphasis that which most collectors will find interesting if not appealing.
No photos, but about 10 years ago, I bought a small bag of Morgan dollars.
There was an 1893-S in it. Unfortunately it had environmental damage.
Still, Sold it to a dealer for $2200.
Never could find the seller to give him more money.
BS, almost every discussion before the auction focused and centered on those two coins the rest of the coins in the auction were hardly ever mentioned prior to the auction. Why after the auction should the focus shift? And I really don't see the article as negative or harmful to Legend as you seem to. I would bet that if you asked a football fan to tell you about the 2020 Saints vs Rams game the only thing he would remember is the one no call play, same principal applies here. If you really think that article was unfair then do you also think that the long running thread on this forum that was started right after the auction; and only focuses on the two coins that went unsold; is also unfair and an unbalanced representation?

It's a good thing we have dealers, otherwise it would be just us collectors selling coins back & forth to each other.
It would probably kill the hobby.
My Saint Set
There's nothing stopping collectors from selling back & forth to each other if that's what they'd prefer, is there?
Only certified dealers should be allowed to sell coins above currency value & the "market" is not to be questioned.
It's for our own good.
My Saint Set
Then buy and sell with dealers if that's what you prefer. Either way, there's nothing stopping you from doing so, is there?
Just responding to your comment putting words in Andy's proverbial mouth indicating that CW needs to cater to Legend and run topics past them which is clearly an exaggeration

Assuming that the online article, which is very brief, is what is being discussed: my only criticism is that the author does not support his thesis, that the two major unsold coins were unsold although the market is "thriving". He could have cited examples of coins that sold for solid prices (as noted above) or other facts to support the "thriving" bit.
Here's the thing about reporting with a bias: you aren't trustworthy if you aren't balanced. Just because everyone else is doing it (even if it's in the other direction) doesn't mean you should be doing it, too. You lose credibility that way. And for what I know of Andy (having known him for pushing 20 years), I would bet he's not too worried about only having positive spins on things. He's pretty good with dealing with the whole picture.
Sounds like biased journalism. Only reporting the negative, while omitting the positive. Should be BALANCED. It's not good for the sponsors or the market, in general. JMHO.

Isn't unfortunately that the way of the world these days with regards to everything?
Pretty much. Doesn't make it right, tho.
