Thanks for the kind words Inspired 70!
As far as the tough dates goes... It depends on the grade range your collecting. The 1870cc is a prime example of this. It’s impossible to find CAC approved in MS (last I checked only 1 exist) but the XF collector should be able to find one within a year or so. Another big factor is finding coins with original surfaces. I passed on a couple different 70cc CACd XF coins because they didn’t quite fit my set. It took me 4 years to finally find the perfect VF With a CAC sticker.
Obviously the other Carson City dates are tougher. With the 1873cc taking the cake. I am very proud of my example. She is the lowest graded coin in my set by far but she spoke to me and when @Leeroybrown decided to sell her I was lucky to be able to step up and add her. For such a low grade she sure stands tall amongst all the trashy higher graded examples I’ve seen sell over the years.
The 1861 is probably the toughest war date. Go through the archives of all the major auction houses and you’ll be shocked at how crappy this date comes in circulated grades. I jumped at the opportunity to purchase my AU CAC as soon as @Pickwickjr decided to sell. She is now tucked away safely where she will remain for the next several decades at least.
If we are talking decades, In circulated grades... I’d say the 1850s is the toughest to find and rare to find PQ. 51,52,54,55,56,57,59 I can’t think of a tougher run of coins in all of numismatics to find PQ with CAC approval. The 50,50o,53,59s are nothing to sneeze at . They are all damn tough to find nice and definitely command a premium once they come up for sale.

nice toners I’m sure your set is at the top of the food chain. 👍🏻

Do you consider the 1870-S to be non-collectible?
I went into this set build knowing the 70s was unobtainable for me. I am ok with that. I know my limits and it really doesn’t bother me. That being said I’ve only seen one example that made me drool. It was graded AU58 CAC. The coin looks amazing but it is worth over 1 million bucks. I know I’ll never own her but I have fun dreaming.
Still can’t believe how you found her. I need to remember to always check the shield lines on every example I see. Just never know when a proof will pop up.
Your set has exploded in the past 2 years Keep up the good work.
Thanks Pickwickjr! It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you have the right collectors and dealers around and helping out😎
@Yorkshireman , @Inspired70 and @koynekwest - thank you so much for the compliments. I’m a huge fan of toned PL surfaces (and there are some amazing examples in this thread!) Here are photos of the same coin, but under normal lighting conditions. I’m usually not much of a fan of fingerprints, but in this particular case, I found it pretty easy to overlook them

Great examples here!!
I have but one ...

Sleeper date of choice is the 1867 and 1872s.
As Crusty said, the 73-CC is tough:

Wow! Willy is that 1872 a Business Strike or a Proof?
It’s a proof one of the few I own. Most of my collection is business strike.
Double Boom! Some seriously great Dollars in this thread....
I really don’t want to see this thread get knocked off the first page so here is another one...
Nice coin!
Adding another to this great thread.

More eye candy: Not my coins....But great pics
RAB, I’m jealous. That is a great coin!
RAB, An excellent coin! It has the look of many 1858 proofs with that cobalt blue and magenta color.
I concur-that coin is a beauty!
