Anyone else have an uncertified collection of a series that you're proud of?

Since I was a poor teenager in the early 90's, I've worked on a fine plus buffalo nickel collection. I'm around 90+ percent now in a great capital holder with an amazing hand picked set that is a slow but steady work. Anyone else?

I finished a set of UNC Franklin Halves earlier this year in an old blue Whitman album. It was satisfying to complete the set rather inexpensively and nice to look at all of the coins in an album. I am constantly torn between building album sets and competing in the PCGS set registry. It is tough to do both.

That is one of my favorite sets ever! Kudos my friend. Still wanna do that set in nice uncirculated 63-64 range.

Just a few years ago I finished a set of Lincoln Cents,(1909-1978). I had been working on the set since 1964. I finally had to purchase a 1909-s, 1909-s vdb, 1914-D, and 1931-s. I never found any of those coins in circulation. I keep the set in a mahogany drawered chest with the rest of my raw coin sets.

There's a whole lot to be said for a raw set. When I was 16 or 17 going to local shows, it was quite an outlay for a 5 or ten dollar coin. I know the older folks here remember. You had to be on top of your grading game to avoid cleaned or over graded stuff. The grading services are a great thing to have now.

A few years ago I finished a Mercury dime set minus the 16-D. Started it as a kid in the
mid 60's and pulled a few out of change back then. Worked on it a little during the Hunt
silver boom and finally finished it with the 26-S and 31-S. Avg. circ. to VF/XF. I still have
it. Sold off my circ. to B.U. set of Morgans minus 3 keys. G.C. helped with that and did
a wonderful job.

Likewise as the OP, I also have a Buffalo nickel collection that is raw, high VF-Unc, missing only the 18/17D.
Though not a series, my complete 7070 is also raw. I think two coins were slabbed that I cracked out. Slabs weren’t as prevalent 35 years ago when I started assembling that!

Yes, I have a nice Unc Franklin set in a Dansco album that I'm quite fond of. Also a Peace Dollar date set that's really nothing special but looks nice in a black capitol-style holder in a wood box. As well as a complete circulated set of Lincolns from 1909-1940 in an old Whitman classic album.

I hear ya! Mine would mostly grade vf-au too, and that's something to be proud of! It's a great set that's really tough, and congrats. Doesn't need certification!

My only real completed set is of proof Franklins and it's a mixed bag of raw, slabbed, and one still in the original mint packaging. I'm nearly done with UNC Franklins, and it's also a mixed bag of TPGs and raw. It never occurred to me to make a set match holders until I got on this forum.

All of my sets are raw in albums or 2x2s, and no offense to our hosts, I wouldn't want them any other way.

Collecting raw on a shoestring budget is fun.

I have collected for over 20 years after returning to the hobby as an adult raw 1950-1970 Cameo Proof And SMS Coinage. A labor of love, that is now in upgrade mode. The collection have great eye appeal.

I have a type set of British Sovereigns from George III to present, one coin of each monach's image. Some like Queen Victoria have three, QEII has five so far... There is no benefit to getting any graded except maybe the George III/IV, otherwise purely bullion.

I have my 3rd complete Buffalo set. 1st set is in a fireproof box for my granddaughter. I started it in the late 50's and most were gotten out of change. It is an AG up set. My second set was a PCGS AU registry set that I sold, darn it. My third set is in a Littleton Album and is Fine to BU. Bought quite a few of them from board members whom I have found to be the most trust worthy sellers around. Never had reason to question one single coin of the many I have purchased. I completed several other sets, mostly all easy ones. I still have a complete Jefferson Nickel BU(in a Dansco) and Proof from 50 up(in a capital plastics holder till 1964). A near complete Lincoln cent thru 1958, lacking the 09 S VDB. Many others 20 or so years ago. Collecting raw is so rewarding. So many hours viewing the coins in hand or in the albums is a rewarding pastime, at least to me.

I have a 98% complete BU set of Jefferson Nickels in 2 Dansco albums that I have put together over the past two years.. All proofs included. It will be a very satisfying feeling when It’s 100% lots of the nickels I picked for having Full Steps and rainbow toning

At one point I was wondering what to do with a coin when I found a better example, some members suggested starting another set, so that’s what I’m doing. My first set will be given to my niece for her 5th birthday this coming January.. hopefully she will continue building on it until the series runs out.

I’d say my 20th century type set in a Littleton folder is one I enjoy. I don’t know if anyone would call it amazing but I like it.

I’m just about done with my uncirculated Franklin half dollar said as well in a capital plastics holder. All CH-Gem BU. It’s such a satisfying feeling to fill those holes!

I really like my clad Washington quarter set 1965 to 1998. I assembled the whole thing from Santa Clara convention Center shows. Knowing I needed a 1996 D Washington quarter and getting to look through 100 examples was so much fun.

i found my run of lincoln cents in 2x2's i put together in the early 70's as a kid. most coins obtained in change from buying baseball cards and slurpees....some by looking thru my dad's pocket change. Thought I'd lost them forever until I ran across them during a spring clean.

many holes left to fill...but after 45 years - the game is back on!

All of my old 'sets' are uncertified...the fun was filling the holes... I have plenty of certified ones outside of the set. I like the Capitol holders for their visual impact. I should get more of those and move the old album coins to a holder. Cheers, RickO

WOW !!! I like this thread. So many nice " raw " sets. 56 years a collector, only in the last 3 years have I started with the slabbed. My roots are in raw coins though. I have about 35 Dansco albums. Mostly moderns so not THAT impressive. I always get excited when the annual mint & proof sets arrive and I can fill in another year in my albums. I would like it if somebody could give some guidance on how to post pictures on this forum. ( Computer illiterate here )

Some sets, 'er a lot of sets that are raw, and still in progress. Have completed V nickels, Jeff nickels through the 70's, Rosies complete, Wheats missing 2 (can you guess?), Partial Memorials through the 90's and then I stopped. Complete MS set of ASE's through 2011 all MS69 or 70 but broken out of slabs and put in a Dansco (all with some toning but nothing spectacular). Have to keep the fire stoked, so always looking for missing pieces.

I have many raw sets that all started with Coin Collecting merit badge in 1968 (my first red book). Too many sets to count, Lincoln, Jefferson, Mercury, Roosevelt, Washingtons, Franklins, Walkers, Kennedy, Morgan, Barber series, 20th century type set (my first set).

Just dug these out. Haven't seen them for a very long time. I do not care for folders. I have complete sets of other denominations. They are stored in slabs, 2X2s and tubes.

Just finished a complete set ef to au a few uncs of U.S. Philippines,145 coins
All nice coins to look at no eye appeal dreck.
Took about ten years or so . Went slow, selecting, upgrading carefully.
Pesos will be put in a new capital holder a fella was selling on ebay he had made. Real nicely done.
Set includes a real 1906-s peso from a small anacs fine holder.
It was a challenge was to go slow and select the right coin.

I love my Danscos. My lincoln albums are missing about a dozen key dates. My jeffersons are complete in 2 albums. My buffaloes are missing a few. My washies are missing mostly silver. Statehood quarters p&d are complete. My Kennedy is missing some silver proofs. Complete prez dollars. Missing a couple Ikes. Sba is missing one. Sacagewea is complete. And SAE bullion is complete.
