I like the 08. The wing isn’t struck up as well, but isn’t that normal for the date? The 29 has nice color, but looks more dingy. The addition of $50 makes it look like a fair exchange to me.
The tip of the wing on the 1908 is never struck up from my experience. A dealer told me he at once had one that was struck up, but he couldn't show me the coin.
The 1908 picture is shot at an angle. I don't know what is going on in front of the Indian's face. If it's nothing, I would probably keep the 1908.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
Hard to say from those pictures, though the '08 'appears' to have more luster..... I am sure your decision was carefully considered and likely a good one for your collection. Cheers, RickO
From the pics, like the 08 slightly better. Looks like a little more luster and maybe cleaner face...
29 seems to have a slight copper spot on neck and maybe 45 degree line across wing feathers ( might be on slab). My taste has not yet adapted to copper spots, but as I learn more about gold, they are starting to grow on me.
So for me slight preference to the 08, but $50 helps alleviate that.

I think the 1929 will match my $5 Indian a little better...
What do you all think?

I think the 1908 is worth more in the current grade than the 29 is, correct? Both are nice coins, but I think I would prefer the 1908.

When I get home, I’ll have them side by side. I feel like the 1929 will match better. My $5 is a MS64 and they’re both similar in color.

1908's never had the same wing detail as later dates. To my understanding, they didn't add those details until 1909
I prefer the 08. It looks like the nicer coin despite the grade difference.
I just put the 1929 next to my $5. I don’t think I could possibly find a closer match for color and luster...

The 1908 is nice, don’t get me wrong and indeed a better date, but I believe this trade advances my set.

It’s hard to see here, but the 08 is a different color and luster. Doesn’t match as well in my opinion...

Great looking piece👍
Are you going to cross it to better match the holder as well?

I would keep both since I like them both.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
It is a good trade, you should do it. Since you have a type set go for the higher grade coin.

Good trade IMO. I’d do it.

Nah, the NGC holder is brand new and perfect, accurately graded, I'm happy to leave it be.

Matching the look of the coins in a set is a sign of advanced numistitis.
That said, you did good IMHO.
