“O” Mint $20 Liberty Double Eagles - How Rare Are They in comparison?

Regarding New Orleans $20 Gold Libs, I have been talking to several of you about them since I recently was lucky enough to acquire one for my set, but I wanted to learn from the forum a bit on this seemingly under rated $20 DE mint to better understand what I actually acquired.

Please help me understand the general condition rarity over and above the mintage and/ or survival rates as well as grade rarity regarding the below piece outside of what DW or someone hasn’t already said in their book, etc.

How rare is this specific piece and from your experience, what does it mean to have an “O” mint vs. another mint like a CC, S, or P, etc?

Look forward to hearing from everyone!

    Leroy,
I would recommend the latest edition on No gold by Doug Winter. Really well written with much of the information you are looking for. Hope that helps. Really like the 1851-O btw

Hopefully you’re download PCGS coin facts on your smart phone/tablet. Seems this isn’t the holy grail since there’s other TPGs but give you an idea of the coin once NGC is checked and coins tend to be gamed for profit multiple times. Of corse you add extras like CAC an somebody’s name and prices get bumped. Everything is common for the right price it seems.

If your a hobbyist it seems the more cost effective coins to build a year are harder (must be more willing to wait for a coin to become available). I just completed my type 1 collection with the 64-s,(66 is a type II) was wanting an AU set but XF45s seem to be the sweet spot over the last year and a half, I’ll take a good mark free XF over an ugly technical graded baggy MS60 any day. My .02 cents.

Nice coin, I have a nice 1851 AU55 CAC for that year and your O mint mark is the bomb👍

I have all the resources that are commonly used ie coinfacts, redbook, DW books, etc. really what I am wanting to get from everyone is YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE with O mint $20’s. Would also love to see pics of other nice $20 “O” mint DEs and hear thoughts on experience with nice New Orleans pieces!

The later O mint $20’s eg the 1854-O and 1856-O, are very rare coins. The early dates are available and pretty expensive for what they are. Your coin is very nice for sure and the added benefit the old holder and gold sticker make your coin chalked full of bells and whistles.

You should be proud of that coin. Very nice indeed.

I recall being offered a very wholesome VF30 OGH CAC 1850-O at the Philly ANA a couple years ago. In hindsight, I kind of wish I pulled the trigger.

the 51 and 52 used to be consider near common dates for common prices when ef40 and bellow. When the CCs shot up in like 2010 it dragged the Os with them. I consider the 79o to be one of the unheralded rarities in numismatics

I have no further information to add, however, that is a very nice gold coin and the O mint is always an attraction. Cheers, RickO
