1951 Franklin Half AU58+ - Real Money

I didn't realize there was that much competition for the Everyman sets. Back in May, an 1951 AU58+ sold on EBay for $1520. The second of the two graded at AU58+ came up at Great Collections closing this evening and just went for $1306.25:

What I find mind blowing is that the prices for these are only below the top pop MS67+, which recently have gone for $2100 and $2400. The straight 67s are in the $1000 to $1050 range.
Not my series, but I'm still amazed that these two coins can bring that much.

Wow!
Wow is right!
Yea welcome to my world! still trying to find ANY AU58+ for my $2.5 Indian Everyman set. I believe there are only 17 total graded across the series for that grade. I’m prepared/Been told I will most likely have to pay 64+ money if one ever becomes available
Just take a couple of Mint State coins, rub on them for a minute and send them in for grading. Dilute the graded supply.
Easy game.
So are 50-55 the new everyman grades?
Wow, that’s a $1290 plus sign.
@U1chicago - try your ex Anacs Franklin toner again
A great AU58+ can be worth quite a bit more than less appealing MS examples.
Yeah, there is the stupid Everyman registry (of which I participate...forgive me) that drives up prices. And while there are questionable exceptions, many AU58+ coins are truly superb.
Lance.
If only it had stickered...
to my eye this is plain and simple foolishness.
First I will say it is the buyer's money and collection and they can spend what they want to buy what they want, their rights.
Second I will say it is my right to think it is a waste of money caused be people who think collecting should be a competition.
Third I say that this is a sign of where we have gone in the first quarter of this century; you don't need knowledge, you just need money
Yes, it is a very nice coin, no there is nothing, outside of the registry, that makes it worth the price paid. But this hobby is supposed to be about enjoyment, so I hope the buyer enjoys it.
It is like lighting your money on fire

Easier said than done!
Interesting.... Since I have a significant assemblage of Franklin halves - raw and slabbed - perhaps I should investigate this area a bit more - could be some unrecognized treasures stored away.
Well... it is possible.
Cheers, RickO
Ok, I could sort of see it if this Franklin was truly a Superb GEM MS67+ with ever so slight 'wear' and thus an "MS67"/AU58 (so to speak). Looking at the photos though what I see is a coin that would grade out at MS64, perhaps MS65 (with no wear). I wish I could figure out what would drive the price so high as I am looking at an $80. coin IMHO (outside of the Registry).

58+ was my dream scenario. Anyone want to finance my multiple subs until it gets the right result.
I was following this Franklin since I remembered the result from last year. It was at $105 with several minutes left before two people pushed it to the final result at the end.
Also, I noticed that the person with the top Everyman Franklin registry set has two of the three graded 58+ coins. This one would have been a duplicate but I wonder if they still bought it to prevent someone else from closing in on their top spot?
It is very clear that there is more money than sense in much of the coin market at this time.
