Not common, by any means. Probably had 2 or 3 of them in 35 years......

"Coin" presumably means "Coin Silver," or .900 fine silver derived from melted coins.

Is that smaller piece a half dime, or just a silver disc made with an attached loop and a reeded edge to make people think it is a coin?

I believe it's a dime that they smoothed off both sides as the reeding feels like a dime...
