1910 $5 GTG

PedzolaPedzola Posts: 1,027 ✭✭✭✭✭

Picked up this $5 gold Indian today.

Anyone want to try to guess the grade? I have a harder time w/$5 and $2.5 indians than other gold, so I'm curious what the forum thinks.

Will post a slab shot later.

AU58 on a bad day, MS 61 or 62 on a good day. They're very hard to grade.

I like the color on that. Wouldn't be surprised if it were a 63, gut was 62.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Alright, now that everyone has sufficiently rained on my parade, here is the holder:

    MS64 CAC in OGH.

For those who thought AU, why? Like I mentioned in my original post, I have always found these difficult to grade. But this one seems like a nice 64 to me.

First thing that caught my eye about this coin is the patina... original skin... crust... whatever you want to call it.

Honestly, the reverse looks MS, but I thought I saw friction on the cheekbone, jaw, and high points of the headdress. Probably just an incomplete strike and/or color variations in the gold. It's a very attractive coin, and obviously worthy of its grade since it got a sticker. Congrats on the acquisition.

Wow, my first impression was AU54.

Apparent wear on the obverse high points, combined with the field marks particularly on the reverse.

I think the coin sat in an envelope for several decades, and what you are seeing is some toning on the high points of the devices. I have a few like that. (this is an OGH 63)

@Pedzola the images don't convey the luster so well, in the images it looks like it mutes the luster. But the images were taken to capture the color over the luster.

Since it is a 64 CAC it must have nice luster too. It just goes to show you the perils of grading from pics, and especially trueviews.

MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

Thanks for the info. I could believe toning. FYI, a cert lookup doesn't show an associated TrueView, so those are probably the seller's photos, I'm guessing.

@CoinJunkie those looked like coinfacts images to me as well.

I took the pictures. Maybe I will try again to see if I can capture the luster better.

I think I like the black background. Shown below w/ my 1911 $10. Need to find a matching Saint and $2.5.

I had the reverse at a 64, maybe 65. The obverse head band/ head dress seemed to have some wear, but couldn’t be sure from pic...regardless, awesome coin.

Well... Late to the game again... but honestly, looking at the pictures in the OP, I thought MS65.... I really like the $5 Indians and look at them frequently. Not surprised at the sticker, it is a nice coin. Cheers, RickO
